MLB Underdog Fantasy Top Picks April 18
Ronald Acuna Jr., Atlanta Braves – OVER 1.5 Hits + Runs + RBI
Coming into tonight, the Braves have won seven straight games with an offense that’s averaging 6.1 runs per game during the win streak. Ronald Acuna Jr. in the leadoff spot is a big reason why the Atlanta lineup is humming right now. The star outfielder is hitting .389 with a .463 OBP, 17 runs scored, 11 RBI, seven steals, and three home runs over the first 17 games this season. Acuna is feeling it at the plate and he’s batting .500 with seven runs and six RBI over the past seven games. He’s gone over 1.5 combined hits/runs/RBI in eight straight games and 15 of 17 contests this year. Tonight, Acuna faces San Diego Padres lefty Blake Snell, who comes in with a 6.92 ERA and a 2.15 WHIP over three starts so far. One of those outings came against the Braves, when he gave up four runs, six hits, and four walks in just 3.2 innings. Look for Atlanta to jump on Snell tonight with Acuna leading the way atop the lineup.
Alex Bregman, Houston Astros – OVER 7.5 Fantasy Points
Alex Bregman has admittedly gotten off to a slow start this season with just a .197 batting average over the first few weeks. However, we’re banking on the Astros third baseman to have better success at the plate tonight. He’ll face Toronto Blue Jays starter Chris Bassitt, who’s struggled to a 7.63 ERA and 1.63 WHIP over his first three outings this year. Meanwhile, Bregman has good career numbers vs. Bassitt, hitting .368 (7-for-19) off the right-hander. MLB BvP numbers shouldn’t be the be-all end-all, but that sample size is large enough to know that Bregman usually sees the ball well out of Bassitt’s hand. Furthermore, Bregman has picked it up lately with a .441 on-base percentage, two homers, six RBI, and five runs scored in the past seven games. He’s also gotten on base 17 times in the past eight games combined.
Josiah Gray, Washington Nationals – UNDER 4.5 Strikeouts
The Baltimore Orioles are proving to be a feisty matchup for opposing pitchers this season. The Orioles’ 94 runs scored are second in the MLB this season and they’re averaging 7.3 runs per game over the past six contests. Baltimore has been crushing right-handed pitching lately with a .381 wOBA (2nd in MLB), .295 BA (2nd), and .882 OPS (2nd) vs. righties over the past week. Look for the O’s to keep it going against Washington Nationals starter Josiah Gray tonight as his strikeouts are limited. Gray has gone over this 4.5 strikeout line in just one of three starts this year, finishing with K totals of four, six, and three. His 4.32 ERA and 1.44 WHIP are subpar and he could run into trouble vs. Baltimore here. Over the past week, the Orioles also boast a high 12.7% walk rate (3rd-best in MLB) and lower 21.3% K rate (11th-best) against righty arms.
