MLB Picks, Predictions & Best Bets Today, 6/2
Rockies vs. Marlins Predictions
Not many MLB fans will have this game on their TV tonight, and I understand that as the Rockies are the worst team in baseball and the Marlins aren’t normally exciting, but there’s some wagers to be had in this matchup, so I’ll be watching!
German Marquez will be on the bump tonight for the Rockies, and that means trouble for Colorado and the starting pitcher himself! In 28.2 innings pitched on the road this season, Marquez has allowed 30 earned runs, 45 hits, and has walked 9 batters. He is also allowing opposing batters an average of .346, holy cow! He is weak against both sides of the plate as well, but he struggles slightly more against right-handed batters, giving up an average of .327 and an OPS of nearly .900.
This is where outfielder Jesus Sanchez comes into play as he’s been the best bat for the Marlins over the past week, hitting .429 with an OPS of 1.169, which has included 15 total bases over 21 at-bats. He should stay hot tonight against Marquez, who just can’t get anybody out these days, so give me the over of 1.5 total bases for Sanchez.
In addition to the prop, we must fully fade the Rockies in this contest as they sit at a miserable 9-50 record entering this series. They are even worse on the road at 3-28, and they average only 2.35 runs per game! The Marlins, for their shortcomings, are at least 14-17 at home this season while scoring 3.94 runs per game. With that, I’ll take the Marlins on the alternate run line this evening at an even -1 to help us bring the odds a bit more in our favor.
Pick: Jesus Sanchez (MIA) Over 1.5 Total Bases (-105 on DraftKings)
Pick: Marlins Alt Run Line -1 (-140 on DraftKings)
Best MLB Prop Bets & Other Picks Today, 6/2
Pick: Rafael Devers (BOS) Over 1.5 Hits/Runs/RBIs (-145 on DraftKings)
Pick: Heliot Ramos (SF) Over 1.5 Hits/Runs/RBIs (-130 on DraftKings)
Pick: Mets & Dodgers Over 9 Runs (-120 on DraftKings)
Player News
After sitting Sunday, Matt McLain has been dropped to eighth in the Reds lineup on Monday.
Spencer Steer is up to second. That seems like something of an odd choice, given that his improvement has been more about power than an OBP that’s hovered around .300 in recent months. Noelvi Marte seems like a better choice there, with Steer staying in the middle of the lineup, but it doesn’t matter a whole lot. McLain has sat out two of the last five games against right-handers and might log more bench time if he can’t put something together soon. His OPS has been stuck right around .650 since late June.
Rockies recalled RHP Chase Dollander from Triple-A Albuquerque.
Dollander gave up 11 earned runs and walked eight over 11 1/3 innings in his three starts for Albuquerque, but the Rockies must think they have no one else worth a look. And they’re probably right. Dollander will start against the Cardinals tonight.
Rockies designated C Austin Nola for assignment.
Since Braxton Fulford was called up as a third catcher option last Monday, he’d started four games, including two at DH, to Nola’s none, making it easy to see where things were heading. Nola was just 7-for-38 with one extra-base hit and one RBI over 41 plate appearances in his six weeks with the club.
2024 first-round pick Trey Yesavage is getting his third promotion of the year and moving up to Triple-A.
Will there be a fourth? Yesavage had a 4.50 ERA and a 46/11 K/BB in 30 innings over eight outings for Double-A New Hampshire. He has a 3.01 ERA and a 134/30 K/BB over 80 2/3 innings overall this year. The Blue Jays don’t seem likely to need him as a starter while already possessing five reliable options and having Shane Bieber set to debut later this month. Still, injuries could strike, or the Jays could decide to see what Yesavage could offer out of the pen in September.
Twins activated OF Byron Buxton from the 10-day injured list.
Buxton missed 15 days with rib-cage inflammation. It’s best to activate him immediately in fantasy leagues, but he probably will get more off days than usual down the stretch, what with the Twins simply playing out the string. Carson McCusker was demoted, and Austin Martin and Alan Roden could see less playing time with Buxton back. It’s also possible one of those two could head back to Triple-A once Matt Wallner returns from the paternity list.
Twins optioned OF Carson McCusker to Triple-A St. Paul.
McCusker went 1-for-3 as a DH in his only appearance during his two days with the Twins.
