Reds vs. Brewers Predictions: Sunday, April 6th

Sunday afternoon brings us an NL Central matchup featuring two young pitchers as the Milwaukee Brewers host the Cincinnati Reds. The starters and a pair of underperforming offenses point to a lower-scoring divisional battle here.

Chad Patrick makes his second start for Milwaukee after a promising debut on Tuesday. The rookie right-hander tossed 4.2 shutout innings with five strikeouts. Patrick enters this season with plenty of hype after winning the pitching Triple Crown in Triple-A last year (2.90 ERA, 145 strikeouts, 14 wins).

Patrick should limit a Cincinnati offense that’s struggled to score this season. Besides a 14-run explosion last Monday, the Reds were averaging only 1.7 runs across their seven other games before last night. They scored 11 last night, but that was with the shaky Elvin Rodriguez starting. Cincy also has just a .280 wOBA (22nd in MLB) and 75 wRC+ (24th) against right-handed pitching thus far.

On the other side, Carson Spiers starts for Cincinnati after a good first outing of his own. He allowed just one run over six innings while striking out five against ther Rangers. Spiers had a 3.13 ERA and 2.68 FIP through his first eight outings last year as a rookie before hitting a wall in the second half. There’s some upside if he can tap into that first chunk of the season.

The Brewers have also been mostly unimpressive offensively so far. Besides a nine-run outburst in the second game and seven runs yesterday, they’re averaging only 2.6 runs per game in the seven other contests. Plus, the Cincy bullpen boasts a 2.91 ERA this year and can hold things down after Spiers exits.

Rays vs. Rangers Predictions: Sunday, April 6th

This is an interesting matchup between two AL teams with playoff aspirations. Both the Texas Rangers and Tampa Bay Rays missed out on the postseason a year ago but either could win their divisions this season. The starting pitchers and some telling offensive splits point to the road squad emerging victorious today.

Drew Rasmussen threw five shutout innings in his season debut for Tampa Bay last Monday. It’s an encouraging sign for a guy who missed most of the past two seasons due to injury. After he came back healthy last year, though, Rasmussen had a 2.83 ERA across 28.2 innings.

Don’t forget, Rasmussen previously posted a 2.62 ERA in eight starts in 2023 before his elbow injury. He also had a 2.84 ERA across 28 starts in 2022. We’ve seen the right-hander’s talent and it looks like he may be back to that consistent production. Rasmussen had a 2.53 ERA in three Spring Training starts this year.

Rasmussen can hold down a Rangers lineup that’s struggled against right-handed pitching so far. Texas has a .256 wOBA (27th in MLB) and .187 batting average (28th) vs. righties this season. The offense is averaging just 3.2 runs per game as well.

Meanwhile, Rangers starter Kumar Rocker doesn’t offer much confidence on the other side. The former top prospect got knocked around for six runs on seven hits across just 3.0 innings in his season debut. That’s worrisome for a guy who had a 9.00 ERA in five Spring Training outings (13 runs allowed in 13 innings).

Rocker may figure things out as the season progresses, but his current form can’t be trusted. He’ll face a Tampa offense that’s been tough against right-handers this year. The Rays are hitting .285 (5th) with a .332 wOBA (9th) and a low 18.7% K rate (5th) vs. righties so far. They’re also averaging 3.9 runs per game.
