Phillies vs. Marlins Prediction: Sunday, September 8th

As the Philadelphia Phillies strengthen their lead over the Braves and Mets in the NL East, today’s divisional matchup presents an interesting opportunity to back the road squad again. Seth Johnson will make his MLB debut for the Phils on Sunday afternoon against the Miami Marlins. It’s always risky backing a rookie pitcher in his first big-league start, but there are plenty of reasons to trust it.

Johnson was having an excellent season in the minors with a 2.33 ERA in 23 starts across Double-A and Triple-A. The Phillies acquired him in a trade from Baltimore prior to the deadline. Since then, the right-hander had a 1.52 ERA in 5 starts spanning 23.2 innings – including a 0.56 ERA in three Triple-A outings. Johnson will face a Marlins offense that’s the league’s worst vs. right-handed pitching over the past week (.255 wOBA, 59 wRC+).

Meanwhile, the Marlins will start Edward Cabrera after Max Meyer was placed on the Injured List. Cabrera was originally scheduled to start Friday’s game but was scratched due to migraines. The right-hander has a 5.33 ERA, 5.14 FIP, and 1.47 WHIP over 16 starts this year. When he faced the Phillies last month, Cabrera allowed 6 runs in 4 innings before getting pulled early.

It’s hard to imagine Cabrera keeping the Phillies quiet this afternoon. Over the past two weeks, Philadelphia’s offense is crushing right-handed pitching with a .364 wOBA, 134 wRC+, .288 BA, and .215 ISO. This is a tough spot for Meyer, who’s allowing an average of 4.4 runs and 8.7 baserunners per game since the start of August.

Philadelphia also has the notable bullpen edge, which is more important with a rookie pitcher on one side and if/when Cabrera starts getting hit around. Over the past two weeks, the Phillies have 2.47 ERA as a pen while the Marlins’ relievers have a 5.62 ERA. Let’s take the road favorites to cover the runline for the full game and first five innings.

Rockies vs. Brewers Prediction: Sunday, September 8th

As the Milwaukee Brewers close in on the NL Central title, let’s get some action on their Sunday afternoon tilt against the Colorado Rockies. We have Kyle Freeland on the mound for Colorado and Freddy Peralta starting for Milwaukee. These pitchers and their respective matchups give a clear edge to the home favorites.

Peralta has had an up-and-down season with a 3.75 ERA and 1.20 WHIP. Lately, though, the Brewers’ right-hander has been more consistent with a 1.61 ERA over his past 4 starts and a solid 3.02 ERA since the All-Star break. Peralta will take on a Colorado offense that has poor numbers against right-handed pitching lately. Over the past week, the Rockies have just a .256 wOBA (27th in MLB), 51 wRC+ (30th), .205 BA (28th), and 34.4% K rate (30th) vs. righties.

As Peralta posts another good outing, bank on run support from the Milwaukee hitters. Freeland has a 5.30 ERA this season and gets a tough road matchup. Though he’s been a tad better lately, Freeland still has a 4.65 ERA and 4.60 FIP over his last 6 starts. Meanwhile, the Brewers are crushing lefties right now with a .356 wOBA, 132 wRC+, and .319 BA over the past two weeks.

Take Milwaukee on the runline for the full game and first five innings. The Brewers were 8-3 in their past 11 home games ahead of this series. The Rockies, on the other hand, were 6-16 on the road since the All-Star break coming into this weekend.

Expert Rockies vs. Brewers MLB Picks

  • Brewers -1.5 Runline (-118 DraftKings Sportsbook)
  • 1st 5 Innings Brewers -0.5 RL (-145 DraftKings Sportsbook)
