Diamondbacks vs. Red Sox Prediction Today, August 25th

Sunday afternoon brings us an entertaining series finale between two teams fighting for playoff spots in their respective leagues. The Arizona Diamondbacks are one of the hottest teams in the National League as they rise up the Wild Card and NL West standings. The Boston Red Sox meanwhile, are still alive in the AL Wild Card race.

A starting pitching matchup of Merill Kelly vs. Tanner Houck may point to a lower-scoring game, but the offenses should set the tone for this one. Before we break it down, check out these interesting trends for both teams. Arizona is 16-5-3 to the over in the past month while Boston is 22-7-1 to the over in its past 30 games.

Since returning from the IL, Kelly has seen mixed results in the Diamondbacks rotation. He held the Phillies to 2 runs in his first start back at home but then just got rocked for 6 runs and 8 hits last outing on the road at Tampa Bay. The right-hander now has a 3.63 ERA in just a handful of starts this season and he may be due for more negative regression based on his 4.02 xERA and 4.06 FIP.

Kelly could run into trouble again here as Boston is hammering right-handed pitching lately. Over the past two weeks, the Red Sox have a .346 wOBA, 120 wRC+, .192 ISO, and .272 BA vs. righties. This is a tough road spot for Kelly, who has a career 4.54 ERA on the road (compared to a 3.12 ERA at home).

On the other side, the Arizona offense should add to the total as well in its own matchup. Houck has an impressive 3.01 ERA overall this season, but he hasn’t been as sharp recently. The Boston right-hander has a 4.54 ERA and 4.85 FIP over his last 6 starts since the All-Star break. Houck has some worrisome advanced metrics with a career-low 21.2% K rate and a 42.1% hard-hit rate in 20th MLB percentile.

Now Houck has to face the scorching hot Arizona offense that’s beating up pitchers on a nightly basis. Against right-handers over the past two weeks, the Diamondbacks are the best offense in baseball with a .376 wOBA, 142 wRC+, and .223 ISO. Grab the over for the first five innings and full game as both offenses light up the scoreboard.

Brewers vs. Athletics Prediction Today, August 25th

Our second MLB pick today takes us to the West Coast as the Oakland Athletics host the Milwaukee Brewers. The starting pitching matchup in this one isn’t exactly appointment viewing, but we can still bank on a lower-scoring game. Let’s break it down.

Joey Estes starts for Oakland as he looks to continue a solid stretch of starts. The right-hander has been consistently effective lately with a 2.82 ERA over his past 7 outings. He’s allowed less than 3 earned runs in 9 of his past 11 outings as well. Estes also gets to pitch at home, where he has a 2.22 ERA compared to a 7.17 ERA on the road this season.

The Brewers, meanwhile, have some subpar numbers against right-handed pitching recently. Over the past two weeks, they have a .287 wOBA (24th in MLB), 83 wRC+ (24th), .202 BA (27th), and .654 OPS (25th). If Estes pitches like he has over the past two months or so, then he can hold the Milwaukee offense in check.

The other side of this matchup has Frankie Montas on the mound for the Brewers. Since being traded to Milwaukee at the deadline, Montas has a 2.57 ERA over 4 starts. He’ll face an Oakland offense that’s struggled vs. righties over the past week with a .245 wOBA (29th), 59 wRC+ (29th), .184 BA (28th), and .537 OPS (29th).

The under has some value here if Montas and Estes can both provide solid outings, which seems likely based on the matchups and their recent forms. Take the under for the first five innings as well.
