MLB Best Bets for August 30
San Diego Padres at St. Louis Cardinals
It's just two teams waiting out the till the end of the season and this point and I believe both squads have been massive disappointments this season given their rosters. Just because they've been bad doesn't mean you can't wager on them though and this afternoon between the Padres and Cardinals I am eyeing up a game total as something is amiss in the sportsbooks. The starters for today will be Rich Hill for San Diego who is somehow still pitching and shouldn't be with his 5.21 ERA and 1.5 WHIP in addition to recently as in the month of April he has an ERA of 9.00! On the other end of things Miles Mikolas with his 4.66 ERA and will get to face a Padres offense that has scored 20 runs over their last 4 games. The projected total according to the model given the matchups on the field has it at 9.25 runs for this game and that's more than high enough over the book line of an even 9 to wager on today so let's hit the over and watch the runs! I am also going to add a Juan Soto prop here as he has hit right handed pitching well this season with a .935 OPS and 66 RBIs on the season. His hits, runs and RBIs is too rich for me at 2.5 though so let's rock total bases tonight as he has at least a hit in 5 of the last 6 games and could go deep at any moment!
Pick: Padres & Cardinals Over 9 Runs (-125 on Caesars)
Pick: Juan Soto Over 1.5 Total Bases (-110 on DraftKings)
Cincinnati Reds at San Francisco Giants
It's a potential preview of the National League Wild Card matchup as the Reds continue their series with the Giants just 2 games back of a playoff spot as it stands heading into today. I don't think I can confidently pick a winner in this one but I do love a prop and it's because the Reds strikeout so often than Logan Webb is on my radar this afternoon. I don't think anyone would say that Webb is a punch out specialist but he gets the job done as he has topped his line of 5.5 strikeouts in 15 starts this season and he is getting a Reds team that misses 9.34 times per game, 5th highest in the league and that number has been higher over the last 3 games at 10.67 strikeouts on average. Just need Webb to not get blown up and he should make the over on this prop and make us all some cheddar!
Pick: Logan Webb Over 5.5 Strikeouts (-135 on Bet365)
Washington Nationals at Toronto Blue Jays
It may be too little too late to save this season but the young Nationals have been playing some really good baseball in the month of August. They have won 17 of 27 games to this point and have stolen series against the Phillies, Yankees, Marlins, and Red Sox of late and they are looking to do the same today in a rubber match against the Blue Jays. The Nationals have the 4th best run line cover rate in the MLB this season at 57.1% so you already know they are pesky and can stay in games but I think they could outright win tonight as Patrick Corbin goes against Chris Bassitt. Bassitt has had some trouble recently allowing 10 earned runs over the last 17.2 innings pitched while allowing 14 hits during that span. The Nationals don't strikeout much either so the ball will be in play more often and I like that for the underdogs tonight. Taking a shot as things have gone well lately, let's grab some plus money.
Pick: Washington Nationals Money Line (+200 on DraftKings)
