Shea Weber issued a fond farewell to the Montreal Canadiens Friday after he was traded to the Vegas Golden Knights on Thursday.

The Canadiens traded Weber to Vegas in exchange for Evgenii Dadonov. The 36-year-old defender isn't expected to play again because of multiple injuries and the Golden Knights have confirmed that he will stay on injured reserve. "Growing up playing hockey in Canada, it's every kid's dream to play in the NHL. I consider myself extremely fortunate to have not only done that, but to have had a chance to do so for a Canadian team and a member of the Original 6," said Weber in a statement released by the Canadiens. "Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined playing for let alone being named captain of the Montreal Canadiens. Pulling on that legendary jersey every night was one of the greatest honours of my career and it's something I appreciated every chance I got. I want to thank my teammates, coaches, trainers, management, the entire organization, Geoff Molson and the Molson family, the Montreal media, and most of all, the fans for embracing me and my family and for making the city feel like a second home. Montreal will always be in my heart. Merci pour tout."

Weber didn't play at all during the 2021-22 season because of multiple injuries. He will remain on injured reserve with the Golden Knights. Weber is under contract for the next four seasons with a $7,857,143 camp hit. It is believed that he won't be able to play again.

Shea Weber could be dealt at the trade deadline.

Weber likely will never play again as he has many physical ailments and while his cap hit is over $7.8 million, there is only $6 million of actual payouts over the next four seasons remaining. That will make him attractive to a team like Arizona that needs to reach the salary cap floor as they could pick up an asset or two from Montreal in exchange for some salary cap relief which handicaps Montreal in the off-season.

Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin thinks it's "a long shot" that Shea Weber will ever play again.

Weber has been ruled out for the entire 2021-22 campaign due to numerous injuries. Bergevin won't completely rule out the possibility that someday Weber will be able to play, but it seems unlikely. That doesn't mean Weber won't contribute to the Canadiens in other ways though. "I think Shea’s presence means a lot, says a lot," Bergevin said. "Lots of times just his look, the way he looked at the team or the players would send a message and that’s hard to do from Kelowna (where Weber is now). I have a plan in mind that I’m trying to play out for Shea. Until I do that I’m going to keep that with me. But if something comes up I’ll let you guys know."
