Player News
Roberto Luongo is among the 2022 inductees for Hockey Hall of Fame.
Luongo appeared in 1,044 career games, while posting a record of 489-392-124 with a 2.52 goals-against average, .919 save percentage and 77 shutouts. He spent 11 of his 19 seasons as a member of the Florida Panthers. Luongo was a finalist for the Vezina Trophy three times and he was the runner-up for the award once. He also finished second in Hart Trophy voting in 2006-07 when he played for the Vancouver Canucks. Luongo also backstopped Canada to gold at the Olympics in 2010 and 2014.
Roberto Luongo will work as a special advisor to GM Bill Zito this season, while overseeing the team's Goaltending Excellence Department.
"It’s exciting and it makes sense," Luongo said. "Before I came on to management, I never really understood why certain people would make decisions on goaltenders that weren’t very familiar with the position." The team is committed to devoting more time and resources into goaltending. Francois Allaire was also hired by the Panthers as goalie consultant.
The Florida Panthers will retire Roberto Luongo's number 1 jersey on Saturday night.
The Panthers will host Luongo's hometown team, the Montreal Canadiens, so it makes perfect sense to do it tonight. This is an honor that's well deserved for the former Panther. He had a 230-241-73 record with the Panthers. He owned a 2.61 goals-against-average and a .919 save percentage while with Florida.
Luongo will call it a career after 19 years in the NHL, the team announced Wednesday.
Luongo hangs up his skates having appeared in 1,044 games for the Islanders, Canucks and Panthers. Selected with the fourth overall pick in the 1997 NHL Draft, the veteran logged over 70-plus games in four seasons, something that is unlikely to happen again in today's NHL. The world-class netminder will no doubt garner consideration for the Hall of Fame, as he ends his career with a 489-392-124 record, .919 save percentage and 2.52 GAA.
