Jason Spezza has announced his retirement from hockey.
Spezza will join the Maple Leafs front office as a special assistant to GM Kyle Dubas after his illustrious 19-year career. The former second overall pick in the 2001 Draft, Spezza played 1,248 regular season games in his NHL career with Ottawa, Dallas and Toronto, scoring 363 times and picking up 995 points. Congratulations on an outstanding career for Spezza who will immediately enter the front office.
Jason Spezza isn't interested in playing for any team but the Toronto Maple Leafs.
That's not surprising as Spezza has made it clear in the past that he only wants to play for Toronto at this stage of his career. He had 12 goals and 25 points in 71 contests in 2021-22. The Maple Leafs will probably offer him another contract at the league minimum, but he'll be turning 39-years-old soon and he might be a healthy scratch more regularly in 2022-23.
Jason Spezza will play in Game 3 against Tampa Bay on Friday night.
Spezza, who was scratched for the first two games of Toronto's first-round series, will replace Wayne Simmonds in the lineup. He is slated to play alongside Colin Blackwell and Pierre Engvall. Spezza accounted for three goals and five points in seven postseason games last year.
The Toronto Maple Leafs won’t dress Jason Spezza in Game 2 against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Spezza was a scratch in Game 1 after playing in 71 games during the regular-season. Justin Holl and Nick Abruzzese will also be scratched.
