Bobby Ryan
Player News
Bobby Ryan has been released from his professional tryout with Detroit, per coach Jeff Blashill.
The moves comes as a bit of a surprise after Ryan performed well at training camp. He had seven goals and 14 points in 33 games with the Red Wings last season.
Bobby Ryan ended the preseason with two goals and four points in six games.
Ryan is on a PTO and trying to make the Red Wings and scoring seven times and adding seven assists in 33 games last season with Detroit. His chances improved with the injury to Jakub Vrana which will keep him out of action for three-four months but GM Steve Yzerman and coach Jeff Blashill still have some decisions to make.
Bobby Ryan scored a goal during Wednesday's 4-3 SO preseason win over the Chicago Blackhawks.
Ryan scored his goal with under two minutes remaining in regulation to tie the game up at 3-3 and force additional time. This game would go all the way to a shootout, where Ryan sealed the deal when he found the back of the net during his attempt. Other goal scorers for Detroit in this game include Michael Rasmussen and Mitchell Stephens. In net for Detroit Thomas Greiss played for 30 minutes and allowed three goals on 15 shots. Calvin Pickard played for the remaining time of 34:35 and stopped all of the 24 shots he faced.
If Bobby Ryan makes the team, he'll be willing to serve in whatever role they ask of him.
Ryan joined the Red Wings' training camp on a professional tryout. Although he served primarily as a top-six forward for most of his career and even last season with Detroit he averaged a healthy 15:19 minutes, he knows he's competing for a smaller role this time around. “When I look at the lineup here, and I’m realistic, the top-six is pretty well spoken for, as well it should be," Ryan said. "Those guys have earned that opportunity. I came in with the expectations that I would be a bottom-six player or maybe even the 13th forward, so I don’t think I can change anything. I would like to broaden my game, be a little more physical, a little more demanding of the puck below the circles and holding it and dragging it instead of taking opportunities to create. I just need to be a little more patient in those areas for me because your leash isn’t the same as a top-six player right now — and I’m OK with that. My patience level with the puck has to be a little better and I have to err on the side of caution at times. That’s part of the process as you get older and start to play different roles within the team." It wouldn't be surprising to see him make the Red Wings' roster, though Ryan suggests, there's a good chance it will be as a bottom-six forward.
