Phil Loadholt
Player News
Phil Loadholt is expected to retire pending his meeting with team officials on Monday.
Another NFL player retiring at what seems to be an early age. Loadholt, 30, was in the NFL for seven years, only playing a full six because of a torn Achilles' tendon that would leave him out for all of the 2015 season. Had he remained with the Vikings, he would've been fighting Andre Smith for a starting job at right tackle, who now seems to have won the 'battle'.
Phil Loadholt (Achilles) said he is 100 percent healthy.
Loadholt missed the entire 2015 season due to his achilles injury, but it appears he will be completely ready to go this year. A second-round draft choice of the Vikings back in 2009, Loadholt made 89 starts over his first six NFL seasons.
Phil Loadholt has agreed to take a pay cut.
This was a deal the Vikings wanted to do for a while now to free up cap room and keep the left tackle in house. He was originally slated to make a base salary of $5.4 million with incentives raising it to $7.75 million potentially but the new deal lowers the base to $2 million with another $3.35 coming his way with incentives. A $3.4 million in savings should help the Vikings go after a key piece on either the offense or defense as they could use help in the secondary and at the wideout spot.
After missing the entire 2015 season due to a torn Achilles, Vikings RT Phil Loadholt expects to be ready for OTA's.
This might be a little wishful thinking on the Vikings part as Loadholt tore his Achilles back in August and it typically takes almost a full year to make it back. Spring OTAs in May would put his recovery at roughly nine months. If all goes well, he should be able to be back for the tail-end of training camp which should give him enough time to get ready for the season, but it's a long road to recovery right now, so some patience will be needed.
