Derek Newton
Player News
Newton was released by the Saints on Wednesday, Luke Johnson of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.
Newton played in just one game for the Saints in 2018 and has the versatility to play both right guard and tackle. The veteran has started 68 of 83 games that he's suited up for in his career and is now free to sign with any team.
Newton signed a contract with the Saints on Thursday, Josh Katzenstein of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.
Newton was previously released by the Saints on Dec. 20, but now rejoins the team's active roster alongside fellow offensive lineman Cornelius Lucas. New Orleans' decision to re-sign Newton could be indicative of an intent to rest their starting linemen Week 17.
Derek Newton had successful surgery Thursday in Houston, repairing both patellar tendons.
Newton suffered a rare injury during Monday night's game in Denver when he ruptured both of his patellar tendons on the same play. The surgery is just the first step in a long rehab process. He will spend the next several weeks in a wheel chair before progressing to crutches before the next steps in rehab can even be thought about. He is certainly done for the season, but there is a good chance that he could miss most if not all of next season as well.
Texans placed OT Derek Newton on injured reserve.
Newton tore the patellar tendon in both of his knees, truly a rare injury. He will miss the rest of the season, but the hope is that he'll be ready for next season. That's a pretty optimistic hope, considering the severity of his injury.
