Ravens OT Andre Smith has opted out of the 2020 season.
Now 33-year-old Smith was not a starter, but he was in the mix at swing tackle. The Ravens have plenty of depth on the interior, but not the outside. Smith made six appearances and five starts for the Bengals last season before landing in Baltimore at the end of the year. His departure is a nuisance but not a crushing blow. The Ravens can find another experienced tackle on the open market.
The Ravens signed Smith to a one-year contract Thursday, Jonas Shaffer of The Baltimore Sun reports.
Smith joined Baltimore in January to provide depth during the postseason, but he didn't ultimately take the field during the team's divisional-round loss to Tennessee. He stands to play a reserve role during the 2020 season.
Smith signed with the Ravens on Wednesday.
The Ravens placed Parker Ehinger (shoulder) on injured reserve Wednesday, opening up a roster spot to sign the veteran offensive tackle. Smith spent time with the Bengals this season before being cut in November, and now he'll add depth on the AFC frontrunner's offensive line.
Smith was waived by the Bengals on Saturday.
Smith played in six of the Bengals' 11 games this season, including five starts. The 11th-year left tackle was a first-round pick by the team in 2009. During that time he started 90 of the 109 games he played in. It looks like the team is opting to see what it has in its younger players as the season winds down.
