According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Ricky Rubio and the Cavaliers have agreed to a contract buyout.
Rubio has been away from the team all season to work on his mental health, and Woj reports that if he plays professionally again, it will likely be in Spain. The buyout has no ramifications for fantasy hoops.
According to Shams Charania and Joe Vardon of The Athletic, the Cavaliers and Ricky Rubio are discussing a potential parting of ways.
Rubio, who stepped away from basketball in early August to address mental health issues, has not appeared in a game for the Cavaliers this season. With the team’s injury report loaded with names, flexibility is potentially needed to add to the roster. Since Rubio has yet to appear in a game this season, his leaving the franchise would not significantly impact fantasy basketball.
Ricky Rubio is putting his career on hold indefinitely to focus on his mental health, per ESPN’s Brian Windhorst.
There’s no timeline for Rubio, and there shouldn’t be one for mental health. He’ll take all the time that he needs. He was set to lead the Spanish National Team in the World Cup this month. He also has two years remaining on his current deal with the Cavaliers.
Ricky Rubio (left knee injury management) is out for Thursday's game against the Nuggets.
Rubio, who missed Cleveland's final game before the All-Star break due to illness, will sit out the first game back for injury management reasons. While Raul Neto may pick up some rotation minutes, Caris LeVert will be impacted more by Rubio's absence. He played 28 minutes in the February 15 loss to the 76ers and spent more time on the ball, which enhanced his fantasy value. LeVert is rostered in 35% of Yahoo leagues. While he has been underwhelming overall, this would be a good time to roll the dice on LeVert.
