The 37-year old shortstop was released to make room for Chris Taylor, also a shortstop. He had limited MLB value as a pinch-hitter and defensive utility player, and no fantasy value whatsoever. He may find a role as a utility infielder on some other team, but will not have any fantasy relevance.
Willie Bloomquist has been designated for assignment.
As expected, with the call up of Chris Taylor the Mariners DFA'd Bloomquist, who hasn't been good this season and is also dealing with a sore elbow. The 37-year-old, known more for his defense, is slashing a putrid .159/.194/.174 over his 72 plate appearances this season.
Willie Bloomquist went 1-for-4 with a double and two runs against Toronto on Saturday.
Bloomquist has just 39 plate appearances this year and is hitting below the Mendoza line. He’s a complete non-factor in any league type.
Willie Bloomquist has said he is fully recovered coming off microfracture knee surgery in August.
The goal was to have Bloomquist ready to go for Opening Day and all signs point to that being a reality. Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon was very pleased with his progress and is looking to play him as their primary utility player.
