Rafael Betancourt announced his retirement.
After 12 years of professional baseball, the 40 year old right-handed reliever is going to hang up his spikes and walk away from the game. Used predominately as a set-up man, Betancourt did enjoy a 31-save season as the Rockies closer back in 2012, but he never really stuck with the job as he consistently pitched to a lot of contact over time, something you really don't want your closer to do. He leaves MLB with a career 3.36 ERA over 652 2/3 innings. Farewell, good sir. It's been fun.
Rafael Betancourt is only interested in pitching next season if he is able to secure a major league contract.
At age 40, Betancourt is bascially on his last leg and it's very up in the air whether or not he will be playing this season. His best case scenario is to be used as a veteran presence to help out some younger guys in the bullpen in 2016. Betancourt is not a guy you want to own in fantasy, though, as he is coming off a year in which he limped to a career-high 6.18 ERA.
Rockies released RHP Rafael Betancourt.
Betancourt is 40 and owns a 6.18 ERA this season. It's possible he will land with another club, but it's more likely that he's thrown his last pitch in the major leagues.
Rafael Betancourt has been designated for assignment.
Betancourt's 6.18 ERA is pretty ugly, but he has been hurt by a .328 BABIP and 52.6 left-on-base percentage. This could be the swan song for the 40-year-old, but he can probably be an effective reliever next season if he chooses to play one more year.
