Chamberlain said Wednesday that he doesn't plan on pitching in the majors again, George King of the New York Post reports.
Chamberlain, who was released by the Brewers earlier in the year, will call it quits after 10 years in the majors. "No, it's time to be a dad," he told King when asked if he had one more try to get back to the big leagues in him. The 32-year-old compiled a 3.81 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and an 8.8 K/9 through 555.1 career innings.
Chamberlain was released by the Brewers on Wednesday.
Chamberlain, who registered a 2.25 ERA over 20 innings with the Indians last season, attended Brewers camp as a non-roster invitee, but the team couldn't find enough opportunities in Cactus League play for him to stake his claim to a bullpen spot. The 31-year-old will try to latch on with another organization, but may have to settle for a minor-league deal.
Joba Chamberlain has signed a minor league deal with the Brewers.
Chamberlain appeared in 20 games for the Indians in 2016 before refusing a Minor League assignment and becoming a free agent, and it appears as though he's signed a minor-league deal with the Brewers today. The former Yankee showed that he still has some gas left in the tank as he posted a respectable 2.25 ERA in 20 innings pitched last season. Whether or not he can continue to post similar numbers is unknown but the signing is a low-risk move for the Brewers who have bolstered their bullpen with the signing of Chamberlain.
Joba Chamberlain has been released by the Indians after declining an outright assignment and is now a free agent.
Ever since becoming a bit of a small-time sensation in New York years ago, Chamberlain has failed to consistently stick on a major league club. Since being released by the Tigers a year ago, the right-handed reliever has pitched for the Blue Jays, Royals and Indians. Although posting a 2.25 ERA across 20 innings for the Tribe, Chamberlain was predicted to be subpar down the road the rest of the season. Chamberlain was not at all bitter about the situation, saying on his Twitter page the other day: "Thanks Cleveland it was a blast. The loved y'all showed me was incredible. Relationships I will never forget. Here's to another chapter."
