Mariners announced that they have released Gaby Sanchez.
After back-to-back seasons of 19 home runs in 2010 and 2011, veteran infielder Gaby Sanchez only hit 21 total in the next three seasons. Sanchez was trying to make a comeback with the Mariners this spring but was a casualty of first cuts. He will try to catch on with another team but with declining power and limited versatility of the corner infield spots, Sanchez may have a difficult time catching on with another team.
Mariners have agreed to a minor league deal with Gaby Sanchez.
Sanchez spent all of last season struggling to make it in Japanese baseball. He'll return home and hopefully can find his way into a better role than just as organizational depth. The Mariners don't have any world-beaters at first with Adam Lind and Jesus Montero leading the charge, so perhaps a strong spring bumps him up the ladder a bit.
Gaby Sanchez will join the Rakuten Eagles of Japan's Pacific League for the 2015 season. Sanchez was not offered a contract by the Pirates and has agreed to a one-year contract with the Eagles, the team announced Thursday on its website. The deal is for an estimated $2.5 million with additional performance-based incentives.
Sanchez has been a platoon player for the last three seasons and there was little to no hope of him getting himself a larger slice of the pie. We wish him nothing but the best in Japan, but for the sake of the fantasy game, we\'ll simply say goodbye.
The Pirates did not tender RHP Chaz Roe or 1B Gaby Sanchez.
