Delmon Young hurled a scoreless inning Saturday for the Melbourne Aces in the Australian Baseball League.
Yes, you’re reading this correctly. The 35-year-old former major-league outfielder has made the transition to pitching in Australia and finally made his first appearance on the mound. He issued a pair of walks, but managed to induce an inning-ending twin-killing to keep the Brisbane Bandits off the scoreboard in the ninth inning. He last appeared in the major leagues with the Orioles back in 2015.
Delmon Young was arrested after authorities say he choked and threatened a parking attendant at a Miami hotel.
From first-pick of the 2003 draft to being arrested in 2016, Delmon Young's career has reached it's lowest point. Young actually had a decent 2015 in a limited role, hitting .270 in 52 games with the Orioles. He's only 30-years old, but this arrest could put an end to Young's career.
Orioles have released OF Delmon Young.
Simply put, Young has been awful this year. With a .270/.289/.339 line and a pitiful two home runs and 16 RBI, Young has shown none of the talent that saw him hit .302/.337/.442 last year with the club. The O's were optimistic they would find a trade partner for Young, but with no suitors they parted ways with him. Even if he latches onto another club, he has no fantasy value.
Orioles designate OF Delmon Young for assignment.
The Orioles had a roster problem with Jonathan Schoop set to come off the DL next week. The answer to that logjam was designating Young for assignment. The veteran outfielder was hitting .270 in 174 at-bats so he should have no problem latching on elsewhere
