Braves released RHP Dale Thayer.
It only took less than two weeks for the Braves to move on from a veteran reliever. Dale Thayer was released by Atlanta and will seek work for the rest of the season. He pitched the previous four years for San Diego and has a career 3.47 ERA in over 250 innings of work in the majors.
Braves signed reliever Dale Thayer to a minor league contract.
Thayer opted-out of a minor league deal with the Dodgers earlier in May after it become clear that he wouldn't be called up. He will now have a chance to prove he can make the big leagues once again after a solid year a season ago. Atlanta can use all the help they can get at the moment so a deal like this makes sense for both parties involved.
Dale Thayer has opted out of his minor league contract with the Dodgers.
This is the second time already this season that Thayer has opted out of a minor league deal, the first being with the Orioles near the end of spring training. He wants a chance to pitch in the big leagues but his number at Triple-A Oklahoma City were far from great with a 6.75 ERA and 2.25 WHIP in eight innings pitched. He is now a free agent and could draw interest on the open market.
Dale Thayer will start the season at Double-A Tulsa.
Thayer was briefly relevant in 2012 when he had the closer role in San Diego for a hot minute and compiled seven saves. He was a San Diego bullpen regular for three more seasons before performance issues and an injury slowed him down last year. He was signed to a minor league deal with the Dodgers and will thus pitch in the minors.
