Background: On June 13, 2016 Bloomberg News reported that daily fantasy sports juggernauts FanDuel.com and Drafkings.com were in the early stages of merger talks. Over the weeks and months since this initial report many major media outlets such as USA Today, ESPN, Bloomberg, CBS, The New York Times, etc., have continued to report and speculate that this very well could become a reality. It has been reported as well that a high profile NFL team owner and Draftkings.com equity holder had previously made a push to get both companies to the negotiating table. Publicly, representatives from both companies have indicated an openness to the concept of the mega merger as well. On September 24, 2016 the FantasyAlarm news team, citing sources familiar with the matter, reported that the transaction was nearing conclusion.
As always, our goal here at Fantasy Alarm is to bring the latest, breaking news that would affect the fantasy sports player. Most of the time, it is related to a specific player or team. However, in this instance this is the type of news that can affect the whole industry. We will continue to report here with updated news and stories as things break and change.

Bloomberg is reporting that Dratkings Co-Founder Jason Robbins will lead the newly formed company as CEO. The story can be found here. Our take: This comes as somewhat of a suprise as it has been assumed that FanDuel would be aquiring Draftkings. More often than not this means the aquirees executive team stays in place with the aquired companies team sticking around only for a transitional period. Looks like this quite possibly could go down as a genuine merger of equals. Overall, we see this as a positive as Robbins is as sharp as they come and the industry as a whole could only beneit from him having a contiued roll with the new company.

Rumor: FanDuel, Draft Kings Merger Announcement Imminent - Fantasy Alarm: Fantasy Alarm has… https://t.co/w1KVOFA60K pic.twitter.com/u1gPbreTEP
— Fantasy Alarm (@FantasyAlarm) September 23, 2016
They say where there is smoke, there is fire and the story that FantasyAlarm.com broke just over 30 days ago has finally been set ablaze. Virtually every major media outlet in the country is now reporting on this rapidly developing story.
Mark Edelman at Forbes takes an interesting look at how antitrust issues may hinder the transaction here. Our Take: We do not believe there will be issues with the FTC as although the collective companies will have approximately 90% of the market, the overall market itself is not all that mature and their are dozens of other competitive businesses. In other words, the consumer still has plenty of other choices to go find fantasy sports entertainment. Moreover, FanDuel and Draftkings will contend they cannot survive as stand alone companies.

ESPN is reporting that the merger is iminent and that terms are just being finalized. Apparenlty finalizing an agreeement with the attorney general in New York was the final hurdle. We are following this closely and will continue to report as information comes out.

9:00am ET - Dave Gonos and our friends at Sportsgrid.com have a little fun here speculating on what the name of the new entitty will be.
2:57pm ET - FA has continued to research and check with sources and the bottom line is this rumor just will not die. In fact, a popular thought is that a deal could be announced as early as this Tuesday at the conclusion of Week 3 NFL. As to be expected, FD has denied there is any deal in place and DK has remained completely silent on the matter. It is assumed FD would be the acquiring company and would hence control the media cycle. One thing is for sure, pretty much anyone you talk to, even in many cases within both companies, acknowledge it is not a matter of IF but only WHEN. Many feel like it would not be until the conclusion of he NFL season at the earliest. Nobody is denying that there are active discussions taking place. These deals are highly complex and the two entities don't exactly have a history of getting along. Time will tell. Stay tuned.

Player News
Panthers released TE Jordan Matthews.
Matthews converted to tight end a few years ago and hasn’t made much noise at the position. The change has, however, likely kept him in the league for a few more seasons. He appeared in four games with the Panthers last year but didn’t record any stats on offense. The Panthers also released or waived WR Dax Milne, C Andrew Raym, and TE Colin Granger.
Dolphins released LS Blake Ferguson.
The team also waived CB Ryan Cooper Jr., DT Neil Farrell and OL Chasen Hines. Ferguson has been the team’s long snapper for five seasons and earned a three-year contract extension just before the 2023 season. He should be able to find work snapping footballs farther than the average snap elsewhere in the league.
DetroitLions.com’s Tim Twentyman believes rookie WR Isaac TeSlaa “could make his earliest impact on special teams.”
It’s not much of a surprise, as most rookies cut their teeth with special teams duties. Twentyman mentioned return duties as a possibility, though the former Razorback never returned kicks or punts in college. At 6'4/212 with 4.43 wheels, TeSlaa is an explosive athlete who never translated his physical traits to on-field production at Arkansas. The Lions clearly saw potential for him to do so in the pros and traded two future third-round picks to move up to No. 70 overall for him. It’s going to be a slow burn for TeSlaa in the pros, making him a dynasty-only fantasy option.
Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell said the team does not “have any feelings on competition” when asked about the quarterback room.
O’Connell was asked about a potential quarterback competition on the Rich Eisen Show Wednesday and was unclear on whether J.J. McCarthy would have to compete to start. He said, “we’ve got an obligation as coaches to put our players in position to attack that competition phase.” O’Connell discussed first putting Brett Rypien and the newly acquired Sam Howell in a position to play before any competition would occur. He continued that McCarthy is “owning it” this offseason and is taking snaps from starting center Ryan Kelly. After missing last season with a torn meniscus, McCarthy has been ramping up workouts in the offseason and is the front-runner to start for the Vikings in 2025. As of now, Howell looks to be reinforcement at the backup spot in case it turns out McCarthy is not ready to start.
Texans re-signed DT Foley Fatukasi.
Fatukasi initially joined the Texans last offseason on a one-year contract. The 30-year-old was a rotational defensive lineman, tallying four tackles for loss and one sack. He returns to Houston for 2025, where he will be a part of a deep Texans front seven.
NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reports Tyreek Hill’s second wrist surgery was part of the original plan and his timeline remains unchanged.
Hill announced the second surgery on social media and Pelissero quickly added some context to the situation. The speedy receiver suffered the wrist injury just before the start of the season and it lingered throughout the year, though he never missed a game because of it. If the second surgery truly is a non-story, an offseason to recover might be what Hill needs to return to form after a down 2024 season. On the other hand, Hill is 31 years old, played his worst football last year, and his offense prioritized targets for Jonnu Smith and De’Von Achane. As it stands, Hill might have the highest risk-reward split in fantasy drafts.
