Semyon Varlamov NHL Underdog Pick: Lower Than 2.5 Goals Allowed

The New York Islanders kick off the season here on Thursday with a home matchup against the Utah Hockey Club. Utah was part of the NHL’s opening night as they took down the Chicago Blackhawks in their home opener, 5-2.

But, we are looking at the Islanders here and their starting goalie Semyon Varlamov.

Varlamov is not slated to be their full-time starter but with Ilya Sorokin not at 100%, the team turns to their backup goalie. Varlamov is one of the more formidable backup goalies in the NHL.

The Islanders are -150 home favorites here today and the projected goal total is set at 6.0 with the under coming in at -120. We also see Utah as -200 favorites at the +1.5 puck line.

So, the way I see this playing out is the Islanders maybe taking down a 3-2 victory so that we check the boxes of under six goals, Islanders ML, and Utah +1.5. That leads us to under 2.5 goals allowed for Varlamov here tonight.

David Pastrnak NHL Underdog Pick: Higher Than 4.5 Shots On Goal

I’m always a bit hesitant when taking a shot line this high. You won’t ever really see someone with a shot line projected higher than 4.5. That said, for some players and in certain matchups, it is more than warranted.

Two seasons ago, David Pastrnak led the NHL in shots on goal. Last season, he was second in the NHL in shots on goal, averaging over 4.5 shots per game in both seasons.

Thursday is the Boston Bruins' home opener after they took an embarrassing opening night loss to the Panthers in Florida on Tuesday. The Bruins' opponent tonight is the Montreal Canadiens, who played last night and allowed 48 shots to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Each member of the Canadiens' first line last night had at least five shots on goal. Add in the fact that Pastrnak is not only on the first power play but the entire strategy of the Bruins' power play is to get Pastrnak open shots from the left circle.

Even with the Bruins' poor play on Tuesday, Pastrnak still came out of that game with five shots on goal. Let’s see if he can ride the momentum of tonight’s home opener against this Canadiens team.
