Packers vs. Eagles Predictions For NFL Wildcard Sunday

These Packers vs. Eagles games have historically been shootouts - in three of their last four games there were 60 points scored with the other game having 46. Only one of those games featured Jordan Love at quarterback but it happened to be the first game of this season in Brazil. The Eagles won that 34-29 in a game that came down to the wire.

Outside of that first loss to the Eagles and a borderline meaningless Week 18 game against the Bears, the Packers have essentially overly lost to the Vikings and Lions. Each team beat them twice. The Eagles have won 12 of their last 13 with the lone loss being to the Commanders. Their other two losses came to the Falcons and Buccaneers.

Green Bay Packers: A Run Heavy Approach

Matt LaFleur had a lot of success leaning on Derrick Henry in his Tennessee days. And that’s a big reason why they brought in the workhorse Josh Jacobs to lead their attack in place of Aaron Jones. After a slow start, Jacobs has been a steamroller lately, scoring 14 rushing TDs over his last 10 games.

In the pass game, the Packers have been one of the more balanced teams. In fact, Dontayvion Wicks ended up leading the team in targets when all was said and done while Jayden Reed (75), Romeo Doubs (72), and Tucker Kraft (70) were not far behind. The Saints target leader, Alvin Kamara, got 89 targets which was the next closest to Wicks. They’ll be without Christian Watson this week after a torn ACL so Wicks will take a full-time role here.

The Packers have been solid on defense this year. FTN Fantasy has them as the 7th ranked defense per their DVOA statistic which attempts to account for strength of opponent and other circumstances. On the good news front, they are expected to have Quay Walker available for this game. On the bad news side, they are without their top corner Jaire Alexander.

Philadelphia Eagles: Super Star Power

On many teams, guys like DeVonta Smith and Dallas Goedert would be stars. And they are great players. But, on a team with Jalen Hurts, AJ Brown, and Saquon Barkley, then end up on the back burner. This team is far more highly consolidated than the Packers among the top players with their 4th and 5th targets being Barkley (43) and Jahan Dotson (33). With the Eagles, you know where the ball is going.

The Eagles defense is also loaded with stars and is arguably the league’s top unit. That’s how FTN Fantasy sees it at least with them graded #1. With three top corners in Darius Slay Jr., Quinyon Mitchell, and Cooper DeJean as well as PFF’s top graded cover linebacker in Zach Baun, opposing pass-catchers really don’t have anywhere to hide.

Packers vs. Eagles: Green Bayt Packers +5.5 (-110 at BetMGM Sportsbook)

If you think about the Packers meaningful games they have lost, it was a Week One shootout with these Eagles then two losses each to the Lions and Vikings. The Lions and Vikings are the two most blitz-happy teams in the NFL per Pro Football Reference. Jordan Love this year has been far better when kept clean  - he has an 86.8 passing grade when kept clean and an 81.4 passing grade when not blitzed per Pro Football Focus vs. a 64.2 grade when blitzed and a 53.9 grade when under pressure.

The Eagles on the other hand are towards the bottom of the leagues in blitz percentage. In fact, they are within the bottom five. Teams like the Lions and Vikings were willing to blitz heavy and lean into man-to-man coverage vs. Love to get him off his game but that’s typically not how the Eagles play, especially on later downs.

So this weekend we are either going to see Jordan Love square up against the type of defense he generally has better success against. Or we are going to see the Eagles attempt to play in a way they might not be comfortable playing. Either way, I think that gives the Packers a chance to outright win this one in my opinion. And it makes taking the 5.5 at -115 make a lot of sense.
