Eagles vs. Commanders Predictions, Picks & Odds: NFL Week 16, Sunday 12/22
Given last Sunday’s results, this Sunday’s NFC East rivalry between the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders is one that will ultimately determine if the division will be decided or not. That makes it among the most pivotal matchups of the entire Week 16 slate, so we’ve broken down our best Eagles vs. Commanders predictions.
Of course, that also means a best bet from our Eagles vs. Commanders picks, and we’ll be making it even more valuable with an extremely generous $1,500 BetMGM Sportsbook welcome offer!
Eagles vs. Commanders Predictions For NFL Week 16, Sunday 12/22
In the early window of last weekend, it looked all but certain that Washington would keep their dreams of an NFC East title alive. While they still did so, they made it far less of a certainty, nearly losing to the New Orleans Saints despite an early 17-0 lead!
As for Philly, they were in cruise control after a slow start from both teams in their in-state rivalry with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Their victory extended their winning streak to a whopping 10 games, which is, unsurprisingly, the longest active streak. So, can the Commanders be the ones to snap it to extend their division crown dream afloat?
Well, the top pick from our Eagles vs. Commanders predictions is focused on a prop market, so we’ll be answering that question from a bit of a different angle.
Philadelphia Eagles: The Quest For The Bye
While we made it sound obvious (in most cases, it would have been) that the Eagle’s 10-game winning streak is the longest in the NFL, it nearly wasn’t. The Detroit Lions had been on an 11-game winning streak before narrowly falling in an epic matchup with the Buffalo Bills by a score of 44-42.
That has now left the door ajar for the coveted #1 seed in the NFC. Of course, that is so important as it provides that team with a first-round bye. Not only did the Lions leave room for the Eagles to soar, but with the Minnesota Vikings winning on Monday Night Football, there are now three 12-2 teams in the NFC East.
Washington Commanders: Finding Consistency
The Commanders were even on that 12-2 trajectory for much of the season, but an injury to rookie QB Jayden Daniels slowed things down with a three-game losing streak. The middle of that stretch was the 26-18 loss to the Eagles. Since then, they’ve been quite up-and-down.
We’ve seen Washington win games 42-19 while also losing at home as significant favorites to a then 3-7 Dallas Cowboys team. Although there were clock issues by the officials at the end of last Sunday’s game, it still doesn’t breed confidence that they nearly allowed a Saints team forced to play two QBs nearly come back and beat them.
Eagles vs. Commanders Odds, Spreads, Total & Betting Lines
Given what we just went through for each team, it’s no shock that the Eagles vs. Commanders odds at BetMGM Sportsbook show Philly as clear road favorites:
- Point Spread: Philadelphia Eagles -3.5 (-105) vs. Washington Commanders +3.5 (-115)
- Money Line: Philadelphia Eagles (-170) vs. Washington Commanders (+140)
- Game Total (Over/Under): Over 45.5 (-110) vs. Under 45.5 (-110)
Eagles vs. Commanders Best Bet: Jayden Daniels Under 215.5 Passing Yards (-115 at BetMGM Sportsbook)
Although the approach and focus of our Eagles vs. Commanders predictions doesn’t directly answer whether or not Washington can snap Philly’s streak, our best bet leans to the answer being no.
If you’re insistent on sticking with a standard market, we would indeed back the Eagles, but with divisional rivals, especially in the NFC East, often having some craziness, we’re going to avoid sweating that out. It’s also worth noting that Philly (9-5) and Washington (8-5-1) have nearly identical records against the spread.
So, we’re going to take an approach that we’ve taken one other time this season, which is for Daniels to stay under his passing yards line. As we said several weeks ago, and we’ll say again - the rookie QB has been phenomenal. That said, this is simply about the matchup and the other tools in his arsenal.
Of course, that would be his ability to take games over with his legs, and we expect him to need to do just that to pull off an upset. That’s due to the fact that Philly’s pass defense has been absolutely impenetrable, allowing the fewest yards through the air per game this season (173.4/game).
That was on full display this past Sunday, as they held Steelers QB Russell Wilson to a measly 128 passing yards, who had been taking sports talk shows by storm with his deep ball. More importantly, when these teams met back in Week 11, Daniels was held to just 191 passing yards.
Therefore, we’ll happily take Jayden Daniels under 215.5 passing yards (-115 at BetMGM Sportsbook) as the best bet from our Eagles vs. Commanders predictions.
