MLB Underdog Fantasy Top Picks September 8
Trea Turner, Philadelphia Phillies – HIGHER than 1.5 Total Bases
After spending the last few days on paternity leave, Trea Turner has been activated for tonight’s game. So, we’re going right back to him with our top MLB Underdog picks because they keep cashing. Turner is on a major heater, batting .373 with a .896 slugging percentage over the past 15 games. He’s also hitting .347 over the past 30 games now. The Philadelphia Phillies shortstop is on a power surge too, with seven home runs over his past seven games and 10 homers in his past 15. Turner has higher than 1.5 total bases in seven straight games coming into tonight and in 10 of the last 11.
Tonight, the Phillies are back home, where Turner is hitting better this season and has 2+ total bases in 15 of his last 19 home games. He’ll face Marlins starter Eury Perez, who’s had some shaky outings since returning to the rotation in August. He has a 3.91 ERA and 4.72 FIP over his last five starts. The right-hander also has a 4.25 ERA/5.18 FIP on the road this year compared to a 1.69 ERA/3.05 FIP at home. Perez is also allowing slightly worse numbers to right-handed hitters. Lock in Turner to keep the hot streak going, especially with his new dad power!
Blake Snell, San Diego Padres – HIGHER than 2.5 Earned Runs Allowed
Fading a pitcher of Blake Snell’s caliber is always risky, but we’re doing it here on the road in a tough matchup. The Houston Astros have been one of the MLB’s elite offenses against left-handed pitching all season and that’s come to the forefront even more lately. The Astros boast a league-best .422 wOBA vs lefties over the past two weeks with a .291 ISO, .318 BA, low 17.2% K rate, and 174 wRC+ in the split as well in this span. Over the past month, Houston is still the top offense vs lefties with a .420 wOBA, .328 BA, and .260 ISO. The lineup is stacked with hitters who crush left-handers and there’s no room to breathe.
As for Snell, there’s no denying the dominant season he’s having with a 2.50 ERA thus far. He’s also allowed 3+ earned runs in only seven of 28 starts this season. However, two of those have come in his past six outings when he faced a pair of offenses that also hit left-handers well (Dodgers and Marlins). The San Diego Padres lefty also has a worrisome 3.95 FIP since the start of August as the damage could’ve been a lot worse with his walk issues (career-high 13.8% walk rate this year). Those control problems can come back to bite Snell in a matchup like this one. The Astros don’t strike out often, are patient enough at the plate, and simply smash against left-handers. To make matters worse, Snell owns an ugly 7.94 ERA in four career starts in Houston and a 6.11 ERA in seven career starts vs the Astros.
