Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire 2024: Tommy Edman, Ryan Pepiot - Week 27

Welcome to the final waiver wire article of the season! We are in the final week of the season, and hopefully, some of you are still looking for the right pickups to help vault you to a championship at the end of this week! You never know what minor change might be the difference maker when margins are small, and the season isn’t over until that final out is recorded. Let’s dive into fantasy baseball waiver wire targets to help you get across that finish line.
We are in hail-mary mode now; don’t hold back when making changes. If you are holding first place, you can play more conservatively and make sure you don’t do anything that hurts you, but if you are chasing, now is the time to be bold and go for it. The FAAB amounts with the players matter less now than ever. This is your last chance to use your FAAB, so go ahead and spend as much as you need to get the guys you want.
You may need some good streaming options to fill out your rotation and get the final wins and strikeouts you need. You can find some of the absolute best streaming options in the latest Fantasy Baseball Two-Start Pitchers and Streamers article from Ivar Anderson. That article is a must-read; getting the right pitching options in this final week could be the difference maker for you.
**Please keep in mind, these FAAB bids are a guideline, not the gospel. You should be keeping track of how everyone in your league is bidding, so you understand that if you really need the player, you should raise your bid accordingly.
Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire: Catchers
Francisco Alvarez, New York Mets
I think Francisco Alvarez is likely the best catcher option that is available for you to pick up, and he is the one most likely to stay hot and give you a boost in homers and total offensive production to end the season as the Mets fight for a postseason spot. If you picked him up last week, he already gave you another 2 homers, and he can give you a few more before the end of the season. FAAB: 3-5%
Colorado Rockies Catchers
I am sticking with Hunter Goodman as my favorite, but I think you could also take a shot with Jacob Stallings. They get to finish this entire final week of the season on a home stand in Colorado, so getting these last games in Coors means you could spike in production from them to end the season and could be worth going after someone like Goodman over even better catchers that are facing tougher matchups to end the season. FAAB: 2-3%
Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire: First Basemen
Justin Turner, Seattle Mariners
Justin Turner has been solid since joining the Mariners at the all-star break. He has hits in 7 of his last 8 games with a 1.025 OPS and 2 homers, hitting in the heart of the Mariners lineup daily. If he can continue to give you that kind of production to end the season, he could give you a solid boost. FAAB: 1-2%
Pavin Smith, Arizona Diamondbacks
Pavin Smith was on my waiver wire article last week, and if you added him, you benefited from 10 hits, 5 doubles, a homer, 5 runs, and 5 RBIs while he slashed .417/.517/.750 playing every single day. If you missed out on this last week, I would still jump in now to end the season as he remains widely available and continues to crush the ball. FAAB: 1-2%
Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire: Second Basemen
Ryan McMahon, Colorado Rockies
Ryan McMahon’s production has been mediocre for a bit, but that means there is a decent chance that others have decided to move on from him recently, and you should absolutely grab him if this is the case. As I said before, they will end their season at home, and I think McMahon could easily be one of the higher-producing 2B/3B players to end the season. FAAB: 3-5%
Jonathan India, Cincinnati Reds
Jonathan India has had a good season overall and looked good recently. He leads off every day for the Reds and provides good power and speed with a good batting average. He is also the type of player that can go on hot streaks and is currently looking locked in at the plate, so I would be willing to see if that rides out through the rest of the season. FAAB: 2-3%
Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire: Third Basemen
Jose Iglesias, New York Mets
Iglesias has had a fantastic season at the plate. He is currently on a 14-game hitting streak over which he has slashed .415/.446/.528, it only comes with 1 homer, 1 steal, and 3 RBIs, but 12 runs scored. If you need steady production or runs, there is a good chance that he will continue to hit the ball a lot and score a ton of runs for the Mets as they make their final push for the postseason. FAAB: 2-3%
Colt Keith, Detroit Tigers
Colt Keith has hits in all but two games in September. This month, he has slashed .310/.355/.379 and is usually hitting right in the middle of this much-improved Tigers lineup. I believe in this Tigers magic and think they can make a push to the postseason and if it is to happen it will probably be along with some solid numbers from Keith over this last week FAAB: 1-2%
Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire: Shortstops
Tommy Edman, Los Angeles Dodgers
There is a good chance Tommy Edman has already been snatched up (hopefully by you), but he is still available in far too many leagues, and if that is yours, you should probably go add him right now. In 29 games for the Dodgers, he has 6 homers, 6 steals, 18 runs, 18 RBIs, and a .284/.325/.505 slash line. FAAB: 25-30%
Otto Lopez, Miami Marlins
This has been almost two months of fantastic production from Otto Lopez that you might not have noticed because he plays for the Marlins, but since August 1st, he has slashed .306/.362/.445, along with 3 homers and 11 steals. He has all 3 homers in just his last 13 games, and he could easily provide some good power and speed numbers to finish out the season. FAAB: 3-5%
Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire: Outfielders
Lawrence Butler, Oakland Athletics
Lawrence Butler has seen a significant drop in ownership recently as he has slowed down some, but even his slowing down has been really good. He has hits in 25 of his last 26 games; in those 26 games, he has 9 homers, 6 steals, 21 runs, and 17 RBIs and is batting .349, so I don’t understand why he is being dropped. If he is available, get him because he has proven that he can be one of the best hitters in baseball over a hot stretch. FAAB: 20-25%
TJ Friedl, Cincinnati Reds
Friedl is another decent power-speed threat that has a chance to get hot and provide a ton of production to end the season. Most of his recent production comes from a two-game stretch where he has 7 hits, 2 homers, 4 runs, and 5 RBIs, but if he can put together another stretch like that in this last week, it could be a great boost to your lineup. FAAB: 1-2%
Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire: Starting Pitchers
Ryan Pepiot, Tampa Bay Rays
Ryan Pepiot has had a solid season for the Rays. He looked excellent in his last outing, striking out 12 against the Red Sox through 6 innings, giving up only 1 run off 2 hits, and not walking anybody. He will end the season with a start against the Tigers and a final one against the Red Sox, and I think he could easily get you a ton of strikeouts and solid results in these final 2 starts. FAAB: 10-15%
Jose Quintana, New York Mets
Jose Quintana is on an absolutely incredible stretch right now. He has won 4 of his last 5 starts while giving up only 1 run. That is 32 innings with a 0.28 ERA, 0.91 WHIP. Still only 20 strikeouts over that stretch, but part of that is the 0 strikeouts in 6.1 innings he had against the Padres. Finishing the season against Atlanta and Milwaukee will be no easy task, but with how he is pitching right now, I think he might be able to keep it up through these final 2 to finish the season strong and help the Mets attempt to make the postseason. FAAB: 5-10%
Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire: Relief Pitchers
Seranthony Dominguez, Baltimore Orioles
His last two outings have been rough, but I think the job will still be his through the end of the season. Lately, the Orioles have started to look like they have a little more life. Regarding relief pitchers that are still widely available, Seranthony easily has the best chances to go out and get you another 3-5 saves before the season ends. FAAB: 10-15%
Player News
Mariners designated RHP Sauryn Lao for assignment.
Lao made one appearance for the Mariners last week before being demoted, and now they need 40-man roster room for Rhylan Thomas. Lao will hit the waiver wire, and if he goes unclaimed the 25-year-old will repot back to Tacoma for organizational depth.
Mariners selected the contract of OF Rhylan Thomas from Triple-A Tacoma.
Thomas, 25, was acquired by the Mariners from the Mets in the Rhyne Stanek trade back in July of 2024. The 25-year-old outfielder is not considered a top prospect, but he could get a chance to play against left-handed pitching with Luke Raley on the injured list with an oblique strain. That doesn’t make him relevant in fantasy leagues, of course.
Mariners placed OF Luke Raley on the 10-day injured list with a right oblique strain.
Raley will be out of commission for at least a week-plus after hurting his oblique in batting practice prior to Tuesday’s contest. This was originally reported as a back injury, but things like this change all the time. With Raley out, the Mariners selected the contract of Rhylan Thomas from Triple-A Tacoma for outfield depth.
Jorge Polanco is not in the lineup for Wednesday’s game against the Angels.
Polanco still can’t swing the bat from the right side because of his side injury, so he’ll get a break after his two-homer contest Tuesday. The 31-year-old will sit with Mitch Garver behind the plate and Cal Raleigh as the designated hitter.
J.P. Crawford is hitting leadoff against the Angels on Wednesday.
Even with a left-hander on the mound in Tyler Anderson, Crawford will get the leadoff nod with no Dylan Moore (hip) available for Seattle. Crawford has been playing exceptionally well as of late, and the 30-year-old has a chance to be driven in by players like Julio Rodriguez, Cal Raleigh and Rnady Arozarena at the top of the lineup.
Luke Raley (back) is out of the lineup Wednesday against the Angels.
Raley was scratched from Tuesday’s lineup after tweaking his back during batting practice, and he’ll miss at least one more game with the issue. Samad Taylor will start in Raley’s place and hit ninth while handling right field.
