Guardians vs. Yankees Predictions: Tuesday, June 3rd
The Cleveland Guardians and New York Yankees start up their three-game series today. We have a starting pitching matchup of Tanner Bibee vs. Carlos Rodon for this rematch of last year’s ALCS. Those starters and the respective offenses point us in a clear direction.
Yankees starter Carlos Rodon is having an ace-level resurgent season with a 2.60 ERA and 0.94 WHIP through 12 starts. The southpaw is rolling lately with a 1.27 ERA over his last eight outings, including a current 14-inning scoreless streak. Rodon boasts a 31.7% strikeout rate (92nd MLB percentile), 32.8% whiff rate (90th), and .204 xBA (89th). His .240 wOBA allowed is a career-best mark as well.
Notably, Rodon hasn’t pitched since last Tuesday as the Yankees opted to start him today instead of Sunday. That extra rest should benefit the veteran. Over the past three seasons combined, Rodon owns a 3.26 ERA on 6+ days of rest (11 starts).
Rodon will face a Cleveland offense with subpar numbers vs. left-handed pitching this season (.279 wOBA, 79 wRC+). Over the past two weeks against lefties, the Guardians have just a .210 batting average (22nd in MLB), .267 wOBA (23rd), and 28.0% K rate (26th) in the split. It’s a good matchup for Rodon, who has a 2.60 ERA at home this year.
Meanwhile, the New York offense should provide run support against Tanner Bibee. The Cleveland starter has a decent 3.86 ERA this season, but there are worrisome underlying metrics. Bibee’s 5.06 FIP suggests possible negative regression, while his 19.2% K rate (33rd percentile), 20.5% chase rate (2nd), and 9.6% barrel rate (32nd) are playing with fire.
Bibee has a shaky 5.13 ERA, 6.20 FIP, and .371 wOBA allowed on the road this season. Now he has to face a Yankees offense that crushes at home with a .350 wOBA (2nd in MLB), 127 wRC+ (2nd), and .233 ISO (1st). They’re also elite against right-handed pitching this year. Specifically, over the past week vs. righties, the Yanks have a .342 wOBA and 122 wRC+ in the split.
Grab New York to cover the runlines for the full game and the first five innings. Rodon has the clear edge in the starting pitching matchup over Bibee, especially considering the offenses. The Yankees are also 7-1 in their last eight home games.

Rangers vs. Rays Predictions: Tuesday, June 3rd
A pair of middle-of-the-pack American League teams start up their series today. The Tampa Bay Rays host the Texas Rangers, with both teams sitting around .500 for the season. Let’s break down MLB picks for Tuesday night’s matchup.
Rangers starter Tyler Mahle owns an impressive 1.64 ERA this season, but he’s also a good sell-high candidate based on shakier advanced metrics. Mahle’s 3.81 xERA and 4.24 xFIP are notably higher, while his .232 BABIP and 86.1% left-on-base rate indicate he’s been lucky. Mahle’s 18.5% K rate (26th percentile) and 25.2% chase rate (24th) leave a lot to be desired as well.
Maybe this is a late breakout for the 30-year-old, but it’s also hard to totally buy into a guy who’s never been this good over a full season. Mahle’s current 6.55 K/9 rate and 9.3% K-BB% are both career-worst stats. Plus, his 2.9% HR/FB rate this year is miles lower than his career-long 13.3% mark.
Tampa Bay’s offense has woken up lately and presents a tough matchup. The Rays are averaging 7.1 runs per game over the past eight contests, which includes multiple explosions of 10+ runs. They’re also crushing right-handed pitching over the past week with a .363 wOBA (3rd in MLB), 140 wRC+ (3rd), and .277 batting average (4th).
Meanwhile, Mahle has been notably worse on the road this year. He has a 3.27 ERA and 4.35 FIP on the road compared to a 0.82 ERA and 2.49 FIP at home. He also has a poor 9.2% K rate in his road outings.
On the other side, Rays starter Drew Rasmussen brings in a 2.33 ERA and 0.93 WHIP. The right-hander is dominating lately with three straight scoreless starts. Rasmussen boasts a 2.14 ERA and .196 batting average allowed in eight home starts as well. That’s impressive, considering his home park is the hitter-friendly Steinbrenner Field.
Rasmussen owns an elite 5.9% walk rate (81st percentile) with a 5.7% barrel rate (79th). He’s one of the more underrated pitchers in the league with a sub-3.00 ERA for five straight seasons now. Let’s back him at home today in a favorable spot.
The Rangers are among the league’s worst offenses vs. righties this year with a .291 wOBA (28th in MLB), .226 batting average (28th), and 86 wRC+ (27th). Over the past week against right-handers, Texas has a .264 wOBA, .213 BA, and 67 wRC+. The lineup has also been held to two runs or fewer in six of the last 10 games entering tonight’s matchup.
Back the Rays to win outright and lead after five innings. The Rangers are just 9-18 on the road this year, including 5-12 in their past 17 road games. The Rays, meanwhile, are 7-3 in their last 10 home games and 9-3 over their past 12 games overall.

Player News
Rockies released LHP Jefry Yan.
The 28-year-old southpaw requested his release from his minor league deal with the Rockies and the club obliged. Yan has been hit extremely hard at Triple-A Albuquerque this season, registering a 7.28 ERA, 1.85 WHIP and a 45/22 K/BB ratio across 29 2/3 innings in 27 appearances. He’s now free to sign with any team of his choosing.
Rangers’ manager Bruce Bochy told reporters after the game that Chris Martin was diagnosed with a left calf strain.
The 39-year-old hurler suffered the injury while delivering a pitch in the eighth inning of Sunday’s battle against the Tigers. No word yet on the severity of the strain, but it sounds like a trip to the injured list could be in Martin’s future.
Zach McKinstry singled, walked, drove in a run and swiped a base on Sunday night as the Tigers eked out a 2-1 victory over the Rangers to snap their six-game losing streak.
McKinstry opened the scoring in the ballgame with an RBI single off of Jacob Latz in the second inning. He then walked in the second inning and swiped second base, but the Tigers left him stranded there. He has had a terrific season in a utility role for the Tigers, slashing .279/.361/.461 with eight homers, 32 RBI and 16 stolen bases.
Gleyber Torres went 3-for-4 with three singles, a walk and a run scored as the Tigers topped the Rangers on Sunday night to snap their season-high six-game losing skid.
Torres singled in the first inning, worked Jacob Latz for a walk in the third and singled again in the fifth, but the Tigers were never able to cash him in. The 28-year-old All-Star second baseman then reached on an infield single to start the eighth inning and scored the go-ahead run on a two-out RBI knock by Matt Vierling. With his three-hit attack, Torres is now hitting .282/.390/.421 with nine long balls, 45 RBI and four swipes on the season.
Will Vest slammed the door on the Rangers on Sunday night, recording the final four outs to preserve a one-run advantage.
Vest came on with the Tigers nursing a one-run lead with two outs in the eighth inning and he got Wyatt Langford on strikes to end the inning. He then returned for the ninth and needed just six pitches to retire Corey Seager on a ground ball to short, Marcus Semien on a fly ball to right and Adolis GarcÃa on strikes to end it. Vest now boasts a 2.28 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and a 49/15 K/BB ratio over 43 2/3 innings while converting 15 of his first 19 save chances on the season.
Tarik Skubal was forced to settle for a tough-luck no-decision against the Rangers on Sunday night after striking out 11 batters over 6 2/3 innings of one-run baseball.
Skubal scattered just four hits on the night and didn’t walk a batter. The only run charged against him came in the seventh inning as Skubal exited with runners at the corners and two outs — only to see Tyler Holton uncork a wild pitch that allowed Adolis Garcia to scamper home. The Tigers then retook the lead the next half inning. The superstar southpaw piled up 20 swings and misses over 105 pitches on the night — 10 on his fastball, nine on his changeup and one on his slider — while registering a strong CSW of 33 percent. He’ll carry a ridiculous 2.19 ERA, 0.81 WHIP and a 164/16 K/BB ratio (127 2/3 innings) into Friday’s outing against the Blue Jays.
