Angels vs. Astros Prediction: Saturday, September 21st

The Houston Astros are closing in on yet another AL West title. This series against the Los Angeles Angels presents a mismatch of the division’s best and worst teams. Backing the ‘Stros seems like a no-brainer here, but the starting pitchers and offenses on both sides can give us more confidence. 

Ronel Blanco’s impressive season continues for Houston. The right-hander has a 2.88 ERA and 1.09 WHIP this year. He boasts a 2.65 ERA over his past 8 outings, including 6 shutout innings against the Angels last start. Blanco should have similar success in this rematch as the Angels have subpar numbers vs. righties over the past week (.283 wOBA, 81 wRC+, .211 BA). 

Meanwhile, Blanco should get plenty of run support on the other side of this matchup. Los Angeles starter Reid Detmers has a poor 6.05 ERA this season and just allowed 7 runs to the White Sox last time out. The left-hander also gave up 6 runs on the road against the Astros when he faced them earlier this year. 

Detmers likely runs into trouble here against a dangerous Houston offense. The Astros are crushing left-handed pitching over the past week (.394 wOBA, 163 wRC+, .345 BA). They also boast top-tier numbers in the split over the past month (.330 wOBA, 118 wRC+, .273 BA). Plus, Detmers has a career 7.17 ERA in 8 starts against Houston.
