Yankees vs. Red Sox Prediction Today, July 28th

The Sunday night baseball game this week features the Boston Red Sox hosting the New York Yankees to wrap up a three-game series between the AL East rivals. This should be an entertaining matchup to finish off the MLB weekend, so let’s see how to bet it.

Tanner Houck starts for Boston and while he’s had an impressive All-Star season thus far, tonight presents a chance to fade him. Houck’s 3.80 xERA is more than a full run higher than his 2.71 ERA. We’ve seen some of that negative regression recently as the Red Sox right-hander has a 4.20 ERA over his past 8 starts and a 5.49 ERA over his past 4 starts.

Houck will take on a Yankees offense that’s hitting right-handed pitching well lately. Over the past two weeks, New York has a .380 wOBA, 151 wRC+, .888 OPS, and .245 ISO vs. righties. The Yanks are also the MLB’s best in the split overall this season (.339 wOBA, 122 wRC+). This is a tough spot for Houck, who’s high 44.2% hard-hit rate (12th MLB percentile) is more concerning against lineups like this one.

On the other side, we have Carlos Rodon starting for New York. The left-hander looked sharp last time out (7 innings of one-run ball), but he had an ugly 9.67 ERA across his 6 previous starts. Rodon’s been up and down all season and he’s simply too tough to trust start-to-start right now.

Meanwhile, the Red Sox are hitting lefties very well over the past two weeks with a .359 wOBA, 128 wRC+, .282 BA, and .836 OPS. Boston faced Rodon in June and allowed 5 runs on 7 hits across 5 innings. The Sox can get to him again tonight, especially considering Rodon’s 5.00 ERA on the road this season.

Take the over for both the first five innings and full game for this Yankees-Red Sox rivalry matchup.

Athletics vs. Angels Prediction Today, July 28th

Casual baseball fans probably won’t be tuning into Sunday afternoon’s game between the Oakland Athletics and Los Angeles Angels. Even if you aren’t watching this matchup featuring two the MLB’s worst teams, there’s still a betting angle at play here.

Angels starter Jose Soriano has a decent 3.51 ERA this year but he also has a few worrisome advanced stats. The right-hander’s 43.8% hard-hit rate (13th MLB percentile) and 90.1 mph average exit velo (19th) are concerning when you combine them with a 19.8% K rate (30th percentile) and 9.5% walk rate (31st).

If there’s one offense that can get to Soriano, it’s the Athletics and their red-hot bats. Over the past two weeks, Oakland is actually the MLB’s best against right-handed pitching with a .406 wOBA, 171 wRC+, 300 ISO, and .956 OPS. This lineup is hammering righties right now and a low 16.1% K rate against them during this stretch makes it tough as well. The A’s faced Soriano earlier this month and scored 4 runs over 4 innings against him.

Hogan Harris was slated to start for Oakland, but he was surprisingly optioned to Triple-A on Friday despite having a 2.98 ERA this season. It appears right-hander Osvaldo Bido could be the starter now. He tossed 5 innings of one-run ball vs. Houston last time out and has a solid 3.09 ERA this season. Either way, we can fade the LA offense. During July, the Angels have struggled against both right-handed pitching (.279 wOBA, 77 wRC+) and left-handers (.248 wOBA, 57 wRC+).

There’s value in the road A’s here as we grab them on the moneyline to win on Sunday. The Oakland offense is one to back right now until it cools off. On that note, take the over on Jose Soriano’s hits and runs allowed props.

Expert Athletics vs. Angels Picks

  • Athletics Moneyline (+110 BetMGM)
  • Jose Soriano Over 4.5 Hits Allowed (-155 DraftKings Sportsbook)
  • Jose Soriano Over 1.5 Runs Allowed (-165 DraftKings Sportsbook)
