Tigers vs. Blue Jays Prediction Today, July 21st
Both the Detroit Tigers and Toronto Blue Jays are on the wrong side of the AL Wild Card standings, but that doesn’t mean Sunday’s game will be boring. This afternoon matchup could see plenty of runs scored based on the starting pitching matchup and two dangerous offenses.
Kevin Gausman starts for Toronto with a 4.50 ERA and 1.31 WHIP – his worst marks since 2019. The veteran right-hander has been up-and-down all year and has been shaky lately with a 4.89 ERA since the start of June (8 starts). Gausman has also struggled at home with a 7.19 ERA across 9 home outings.
Gausman will face a Detroit offense that’s hammering right-handed pitching lately. Since the start of July, the Tigers boast a .362 wOBA, 136 wRC+, .221 ISO, and .843 OPS vs. righties. They also averaged 5.6 runs per game over the last 15 contests before the All-Star break. This could be rough for Gausman, who’s 5.18 xERA (10th MLB percentile), .275 xBA (12th), 11.5% barrel rate (5th), and 43.0% hard-hit rate (19th) are all worrisome.
Meanwhile, the Blue Jays should add to the total in their own matchup too. Tigers rookie starter Keider Montero has a 5.47 ERA and 5.25 FIP through 5 outings (4 starts). He just allowed 5 runs to the Dodgers last time out and is impossible to trust right now. Though Toronto isn’t the best offense vs. righties, the experienced lineup can still pounce on the shaky young arm of Montero.
Grab the over for both the full game and first five innings as we root for scoring of any kind in this American League battle.

Brewers vs. Twins Prediction Today, July 21st
Our second MLB pick for Sunday afternoon’s action features the Minnesota Twins hosting the Milwaukee Brewers. It’s an intriguing interleague series between an AL Wild Card contender and the NL Central division leaders. Let’s see how to bet the matinee.
Twins starter Joe Ryan has a decent 3.53 ERA this season, but there are reasons for optimism. The right-hander has a 2.45 ERA over his past four home starts and gets a home matchup here. Plus, Ryan’s 4.1% walk rate (96th MLB percentile), 27.0% strikeout rate (80th), 3.07 xERA (86th), and .221 xBA (78th) are all impressive advanced metrics. Though he allowed 5 runs on the road at San Francisco last outing, Ryan had a 3.13 ERA across his 6 previous starts before that.
The Brewers, meanwhile, have struggled against right-handed pitching over the past two weeks with a .280 wOBA, 79 wRC+, 31.2% strikeout rate, and .183 batting average. The offense was slumping a bit before the All-Star break and could be limited in this spot. Ryan can certainly take advantage at home.
Let’s also bank on Ryan getting run support from the Minnesota lineup in its own matchup. Aaron Civale will be making his third start with Milwaukee after being traded by the Rays a few weeks ago. He’s had a shaky season with a 4.94 ERA and 1.38 WHIP thus far. The right-hander has especially struggled on the road with a 6.23 ERA across 9 road outings. Civale also has a 5.25 FIP since the beginning of June (seven starts).
Civale could have a rough day against a potent Twins offense that’s hammering righties. Over the past two weeks, they boast a .356 wOBA, 133 wRC+, .294 BA, and .813 OPS vs. right-handed pitching. The Twins also have arguably the best home offense in the MLB this season, leading the league in home wOBA (.343), wRC+ (126), BA (.268) and OPS (.791).
Take the Twins moneyline to win on Sunday and grab them to lead the first five innings. The odds on the ML admittedly aren’t great, so the runline can be considered as well.

Player News
Willy Adames has been moved down to the sixth spot in the lineup for Monday’s game against the Diamondbacks.
Giants manager Bob Melvin has finally decided to shake things up with Adames hitting just .217/.297/.335 with four homers, 19 RBI and two steals through 41 games in his San Francisco debut. It’ll be Matt Chapman and Heliot Ramos hitting second and third, respectively, with Jung Hoo Lee in the cleanup spot. The hope for fantasy managers is that the move will reduce some of the pressure on Adames and help get him going at the dish. He’s too talented to continue flailing, especially since his plate skills and underlying batted ball metrics remain mostly in line with previous seasons.
Luis Rengifo is not in the lineup for Monday’s series opener against the Padres.
Rengifo is out of the lineup for the third time in the last five games with Tim Anderson at second base. He’s in the midst of an extended tailspin at the plate, batting .191 (9-for-47) with zero homers and one steal over his last 15 games. He’s hitting .091 (2-for-22) over his past seven contests.
Jackson Merrill (illness) is back in the lineup for Monday’s series opener against the Angels.
Merrill is back at DH and batting cleanup on Monday night at Petco Park after missing Sunday’s contest against the Rockies due to illness. The 22-year-old fantasy star is hitting .579 (11-for-19) with one homer and six RBI in four games since returning from the injured list last week.
Oneil Cruz (back) remains absent from the lineup for Monday’s series opener against the Mets.
Cruz will miss his second consecutive game following an early exit from Saturday’s game with lower back tightness. It doesn’t sound like a significant concern, but it’s a situation fantasy managers should continue to monitor. The 26-year-old fantasy star leads the majors with 16 stolen bases in 37 games this season. It’ll be rookie Alexander Canario patrolling center field on Monday night at Citi Field.
Pirates activated SS Isiah Kiner-Falefa from the 10-day injured list.
Kiner-Falefa is back at shortstop and batting sixth on Monday against the Mets following a minimum stint on the injured list with a right hamstring strain. The versatile 30-year-old is hitting .280/.333/.330 with 11 runs scored, zero homers, seven RBI and six steals through 30 games.
Pirates optioned INF Liover Peguero to Triple-A Indianapolis.
Peguero returns to the minors with Isaiah Kiner-Falefa back from the injured list ahead of Monday’s game against the Mets. The 24-year-old infielder went 2-for-9 in four games with the Pirates after returning to the big leagues on May 2.
