Keider Montero earned the first victory of his MLB career on Wednesday, limiting the Twins to two runs on six hits over his 6 1/3 innings of work.
The 23-year-old hurler punched out four batters on the night while allowing just one base on balls. He served up a solo homer to Christian Vazquez in the third inning then kept the Twins’ offense at bay until Brooks Lee delivered an RBI single in the seventh. Montero got eight swings and misses on 80 pitches on the evening — five on his slider — while posting a CSW of 33 percent. He’ll attempt to further improve upon his 6.60 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 15/5 K/BB ratio (15 innings) when he does battle against the Guardians next week.
Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports that the Tigers will likely start Keider Montero on Wednesday against the Phillies.
Montero, 23, is with the Tigers and has a locker, so a roster move is very likely coming. As Stavenhagen notes, Detroit has a “TBD” listed as their current starter for Wednesday’s game, but the right-hander likely will take that spot. He would be a very risky streaming option against Philadelphia, and the reward doesn’t match that risk. Mason Englert is likely the arm that heads down in the corresponding move.
Keider Montero was hit hard in his big league debut on Wednesday, giving up four runs on five hits over 4 1/3 innings in a loss to the Pirates.
The 23-year-old right-hander racked up five strikeouts on the afternoon while issuing a pair of free passes. Most of the damage done against him came via the long ball, as Andrew McCutchen crushed a three-run homer in the third inning and Nick Gonzales added a solo shot in the fourth. Montero got 10 swings and misses on 87 pitches on the day — five of those on his slider — while posting a CSW of 26 percent. He’ll return to Triple-A Toledo where he’ll continue to function as excess pitching depth for the Tigers.
Tigers selected the contract of RHP Keider Montero from Triple-A Toledo.
The Tigers saw enough from the 23-year-old hurler during the 2023 campaign to protect him from the upcoming Rule 5 draft. Montero registered a 4.66 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and a 160/49 K/BB ratio over 127 1/3 innings in 27 appearances (26 starts) across three minor league levels in 2023, finishing with his final eight appearances at Triple-A Toledo.
