This move follows him being DFA'd late last week by Kansas City in order to make room on the roster for Whit Merrifield who is off to a raucous start at second base. If Infante goes unclaimed at this point, he will become an unrestricted free agent as soon as Thursday meaning he could sign with anyone. At 34 and struggling from the plate the last couple of seasons, he would only be depth to almost any other team at this point despite his gaudy All-Star Game vote totals.

Despite playing better than last season the Royals have designated Infante for assignment. The Royals have plenty of infield depth, so even with injuries to other members of the team, Infante became expendable.

With Merrifield now up on the big league roster, the Royals will play him all over as was the case Friday with Infante getting the day off. He will be back in the lineup Saturday as he looks to build upon his .248 average.
