NHL DFS Playbook October 15: Tim Stutzle and the Senators Welcome Lightning to Town
Published: Oct 15, 2023
Welcome to Sunday’s two-game NHL Slate. The Tampa Bay Lighting take on the Ottawa Senators in the first game, while the Carolina Hurricanes travel to Anaheim and face the Ducks. There are going to be a healthy amount of goals scored on both sides, so we should have no problem identifying good options. We still need to find value so we can fit those elite forwards into our lineup. You can build daily fantasy hockey lineups on DraftKings, FanDuel, and Yahoo Fantasy for Sunday, October 15th, but before you build those NHL daily fantasy lineups, don’t forget to check out our NHL DFS projections, the NHL Value Finder, and the NHL DFS lineup generator. Let's now take a closer look at the daily fantasy hockey top plays for tonight's NHL DFS Showdown slate.
Highest Expected Goal Totals
Carolina Hurricanes Vs. Lukas Dostal (4.2)
Ottawa Senators Vs. Matt Tomkins (3.7)
Tampa Bay Lightning Vs Joonas Koprisalo (3.5)
Anaheim Ducks Vs Antti Raanta (2.5)
Tampa Bay Lightning Vs. Ottawa Senators
Players to target: Tim Stutzle, Brady Tkachuk, Vladimir Tarasenko, Jakub Chychrun, Jake Sanderson, Nicholas Paul, Steven Stamkos, Brandon Hagel, Mikhail Sergachev, Eric Cernak
This game has a total of 7.0, so we should see a ton of scoring chances on both sides. We need to pay up for elite players like Tim Stutzle and Steven Stamkos, but we also need value in guys like Jake Sanderson and Eric Cernak. Nicholas Paul and Vladimir Tarasenko provide some good mid-price value to help you get some exposure to the top six without breaking the bank.
There’s nothing wrong with wanting to target Brayden Point and Nikita Kucherov, but they are going to be chalk. You know they are going to get points, but will it be enough to hit value?
The back end is going to be forgotten by most DFS players are that where we can take advantage. Jakub Chychrun has had a great start to the season and he should be able to continue to provide a high floor. Victor Hedman has been good to start the season, but I’m still a big believer in Mikhail Sergachev. We know he can provide offence, but it’s his blocked shots that we are targeting here. He can hit value without having to register a point.
As for goalies, just don’t both. This game is going to be so high-scoring that I can imagine whoever starts to get close to value. It wouldn’t surprise me to see both goalies finish in the single digits in terms of fantasy points.
Carolina Hurricanes Vs. Anaheim Ducks
Players to target: Sebastian Aho, Jesperi Kotkaniemi, Seth Jarvis, Martin Necas, Troy Terry, Teuvo Teravainen, Brent Burns, Tony DeAngelo, Cam Fowler, Ilya Lyubushkin, Antti Raanta
The Anaheim Ducks didn’t look great on Saturday night and they could look even worse here. Carolina managed to score five goals against a good Los Angeles Kings team, so the sky is the limit for them here.
Let’s start with Carolina and a couple of studs, specifically Sebastian Aho and Brent Burns. If you have the salary to make it work, add them to your lineup, but I would still prioritize TBL/OTT skaters because the upside is just so high and there is good value to be found on his Hurricane’s team. Jesperi Kotkaniemi, Seth Jarvis, Teuvo Teravainen and Tony DeAngelo are all great affordable options to pick from. You can’t go wrong with any combination of those four.
On the other side, there isn’t much to love from Anaheim offensively. You’ll be able to fill your C/W positions without having to even consider anyone from this terrible hockey team. If you want at least one skater, make it Troy Terry.
The real value of this team is on the back end. Cam Fowler has some offensive pop to his game, but he blocked a whopping SEVEN shots yesterday against Las Vegas. Now, I’m not expecting another seven tonight, but I do think he can hit value at his current $4100 price tag. If you need a really cheap defenceman, Ilya Lyubushkin finished with three blocked shots and is seeing time on the second penalty kill unit. He’s $2500, so don’t expect too much from him. If anything, he allows you to pay up for another elite forward.
We need to choose a goalie tonight, so Antti Raanata is by default the best option. I don’t love paying up for him, but there is no way I’m even considering spending money on any other goalie. There aren’t any non-starting goalies at $6500, so we can’t even exploit the “No Goalie” strategy. It’s not pretty tonight, so pay the premium for a good goalie and just hope Raanta doesn’t ruin our Sunday night.
