THE NHL IS BACK! The 4-Nations Face-Off was a huge success for hockey overall but we are back to the regular season with an eight-game slate!
NHL DFS Picks & Daily Fantasy Playbook Today, February 23rd
We saw some interesting results with yesterday's games, where a lot of big underdogs won and some teams looked a bit slow on offense. Regardless, we are at an extremely important point in the NHL season with the trade deadline less than two weeks away.
NHL DFS Pick'em Picks on Sleeper Fantasy
- Lucas Raymond Higher Than 2.5 Shots on Goal
- Nico Hischier Higher Than 0.5 Points
- Cale Makar Higher Than 0.5 Points
Despite a bit of a collapse yesterday, the Detroit Red Wings are still a solid team and worth trusting. Let's turn to Lucas Raymond for higher than 2.5 shots on goal. Over his last 10 games, he has 32 shots on goal, while seeing time on the first forward line and the first power-play unit. Since the start of January, the Anaheim Ducks have allowed 67.21 Total Shot Attempts per 60 minutes in five-on-five situations, which is the second-worst in the league.
The Devils looked a bit slow last night on offense last night for a decent portion of the game but they were up against a solid Dallas Stars lineup and have a much easier matchup tonight versus the Nashville Predators. The Devils have a 3.2 implied goal total and they should be able to push towards that against the Predators' defense, who have allowed 3.15 Goals per 60 minutes in five-on-five situations, which is the second-worst in the league since the start of January. Nico Hischier is back in the lineup for the Devils and as their top-line center, he's in a great spot to pick up a point.
Cale Makar and the Colorado Avalanche only scored one goal last night but they out-shot the Predators 32-17. They come in with a 3.1 implied goal total against the St. Louis Blues, where the elite Avalanche offense should be back on full display. Makar has 63 points in 58 games this season, while en route to another Norris Trophy.
Sunday Salary Cap DFS Picks
Goalie Of The Day: Alex Lyon - DET
The Detroit Red Wings had a 3-1 lead against the Minnesota Wild to start the 3rd period yesterday and they lost 4-3 in overtime. It's not the way you want to get the final portion of the season started but they have a chance to rebound tonight against the Anaheim Ducks.
Alex Lyon should be in net for the Wings tonight and it's a great matchup since the Ducks are only scoring 2.15 Goals per 60 minutes in five-on-five situations, which is the 12th lowest in the league since the start of January. Lyon has allowed two goals or fewer in four of his last five games, a trend that should only continue tonight.
Play Of The Day: Nathan MacKinnon - COL
Nathan MacKinnon looked great in the 4 Nations Face-Off and he continued that in his first game back last night. While he didn't rack up any points, he had an awesome eight shots on goal, which shouldn't surprise anyone.
With the Avalanche rocking a solid 3.1 implied goal total, MacKinnon should be firmly involved in the offense. Over the last 10 games, MacKinnon has 15 points and a whopping 52 shots on goal. His fantasy potential can only be matched by a handful of players on this slate and spending up for MacKinnon is well worth it.
Value Play Of The Day: Matt Coronato - CGY
The Calgary Flames have a solid 3.4 implied goal total against the San Jose Sharks, giving us a clear team to target for fantasy production. Since the start of January, the Sharks have allowed 3.39 Goals per 60 minutes in five-on-five situations, which is the worst in the league.
Let's look to Matt Coronato, who is skating on the first forward line and the first power-play, which allowed him to rack up 6 points and 24 shots on goal in the previous 10 games.
Stack Of The Day: TB1 (Jake Guentzel, Brayden Point, Nikita Kucherov)
The Tampa Bay Lightning have a big 3.7 implied goal total tonight and they should be a popular option in all formats. They're going up against the Seattle Kraken, who are coming off a nice win over the Florida Panthers yesterday, and frankly, I don't expect the Kraken to win back-to-back games against the Panthers and Lightning.
Since the start of January, the Kraken have allowed 2.71 Goals per 60 minutes in five-on-five situations, which is the sixth-worst in the league. The trio on the top line was red hot before the break with Guentzel having 8 points and 33 shots on goal, Point having 8 points and 26 shots on goal, and Kucherov having 14 points and 34 shots on goal. You could look to add in defender Victor Hedman to round out the power-play unit but it comes down to what salary you have available.

Player News
Orioles manager Brandon Hyde told reporters that Zach Eflin (lat) is likely to return and start Sunday against the Angels
It was assumed that Eflin would be back this weekend, but now we have a concrete date. The 31-year-old may not be at full strength after throwing fewer than 60 pitches in his rehab start, but the Orioles feel confident enough to have the right-hander back on the bump for the series finale against the Angels.
Riley Greene is not in the lineup for the first game of a doubleheader against the Rockies on Thursday.
Greene will get a break and likely return to the lineup for the second game of the twin-billing. Zach McKinstry will get the start in left field while Greene rests.
Panthers released TE Jordan Matthews.
Matthews converted to tight end a few years ago and hasn’t made much noise at the position. The change has, however, likely kept him in the league for a few more seasons. He appeared in four games with the Panthers last year but didn’t record any stats on offense. The Panthers also released or waived WR Dax Milne, C Andrew Raym, and TE Colin Granger.
Yu Darvish (elbow) is facing live hitters on Thursday.
Darvish has been throwing bullpen sessions and traveled to the team’s complex in Arizona to face live hitters on Thursday. It will be his first time facing live batters since a spring training appearance on March 13th. He will likely need a few sessions like this before the Padres can map out a rehab appearance timeline for him.
Adael Amador is starting at second base and batting ninth for the Rockies on Thursday.
Amador has now started three of the last four games at second base for the Rockies. He’s gone just 7-for-43 this season with 15 strikeouts in 16 games. He’s just 22 years old, so there is plenty of time for him to adjust to the MLB level, but he doesn’t need to be on redraft radars right now.
Jackson Holliday is playing second base and batting second for the Orioles on Thursday against the Twins.
With Cedric Mullins sitting out on Thursday, Gunnar Henderson will bat lead off, and Holliday will jump up from sixth in the order to second. Holliday is riding a hot streak right now, and the Orioles are taking advantage. This is likely just a one-game sample with no Mullins or Adley Rutschman in the lineup, but Rutschman has been struggling, so perhaps it could become a more permanent spot in the lineup for Holliday moving forward.
