NFL Picks, Predictions & Best Bets For Friday Night Football, 9/6

Something we always need to consider when the NFL goes international is the overall location. There is no elevation above sea level to concern ourselves with like Mexico City, but field conditions are always going to be watched closely.

So far, there haven’t been any negative reports, so the NFL best bets for Friday Night Football shouldn’t be affected. Of course, how being in a new country like Brazil with all its spectacular nightlife affects the mindset of guys like Jalen Hurts and Jordan Love, we’ll just have to wait and see.

Friday Night Football Prediction: Friday, September 6th

The matchup in Brazil should be a fantastic one as both the Packers and Eagles have all sorts of offensive potential while neither defense was overwhelmingly efficient late last season. In fact, both the Eagles and Packers ranked in the bottom five for DVOA against both the pass and the run last season. Some adjustments were obviously made in the offseason, but was it enough to give one team a firm edge over the other? Tough to say.

Let’s start with the Eagles first since everyone remains focused on their late-season collapse and 1-5 finish to the 2023 season. One of the biggest moves for them was the addition of new offensive coordinator Kellen Moore who brings his Air Coryell offense to Philadelphia, a team that was far too reliant on the legs of their quarterback. Well, Hurts’ legs and Jason Kelce’s power at center.

Moore likes a power run that sets up the downfield passing work, so the addition of Saquon Barkley is going to be huge. The Packers really struggled to stop the run last year and we expect to see a heavy dose of Barkley in an effort to set up play-action and bigger plays to A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith. If they can be successful, this offense should do well in moving the ball and scoring points.

Love was a true revelation for the Packers last season as he looked the part of a true Green Bay gunslinger. The arsenal of weapons at his disposal in the form of Romeo Doubs, Jayden Reed and Christian Watson are going to drive this Eagles secondary bonkers, but in order for that to happen, the Pack need to unleash their new backfield weapon, Josh Jacobs.

Packers head coach Matt LaFleur is a big believer in the run game and likes to use it to set up the pass in his west coast style offense. People were down on Jacobs after last season, but a contentious relationship with the Las Vegas front office, along with a terrible offensive line, contributed to the struggles. Jacobs is a solid back who should be deployed early and often against a defense that also struggled to stop the run. Once established, the passing game should start to take off.

We may see both offenses try to start off with some fireworks – lots of receiving weapons, a new location, the excitement of a new season – but both coaches are firm believers in grinding out the yards and earning the points. As mentioned in previous betting articles, NFL picks and NFL predictions from the public often come from what they want to see, not what they will actually see. When I look at the NFL best bets for Friday Night Football, it is important to remain both stoic and impartial.

Packers vs. Eagles Best Bet: Friday, September 6th

Now that we’ve assessed the love for both offenses and the questions surrounding both defenses, we can start diving into our NFL best bets for Friday Night Football. For me, establishing the run is going to be incredibly important for both teams and the one that has the most success doing so is likely the team that wins this game. The books have this match-up as a close one with the Packers as a slight underdog.

The data from previous seasons seems to favor taking the Packers, but my lean towards the Eagles comes from some improvements they’ve made in the secondary, a better offensive line and the need to eradicate any thoughts regarding last season’s collapse. Barkley and Jacobs are both strong, but I’ll give the lean to the Eagles ground game. This could be a close one throughout and if it comes down to a field goal, I like Jake Elliot a lot.

Two explosive offenses, two middling defenses and a whole lot of excitement in Brazil. Gets you hyped up, doesn’t it. With so many complaints regarding field conditions in international games, I expect the NFL did its best to ensure we don’t have any issues which would slow things down.

Pace of play should be interesting to watch in this one as Matt LaFleur and Nick Sirriani prefer a slower approach, but Kellen Moore likes to get to the line of scrimmage in a hurry. I think that, plus the subpar defenses give us a little more excitement.
