NFL Injury Report 2024 - Fantasy Football Week 9: Jordan Love & More

After a no bye week Week 8, we turn the page to Week 9 NFL injuries where we have a lot of situations to take note of.
We’ll also see more players added to this fantasy football injury report list when official reports for teams are first released on Wednesday.
NFL Injury Report For Week 9: Fantasy Football Injuries
Until then though, we’ll have to listen to a lot of coaches speak about how their players are doing.
Let's dive into the Week 9 NFL injury report for 2024.
NFL Week 9 Injury Report: Quarterbacks
Jordan Love Injury Update - Groin
After initial concern, Ian Rapoport reported on Monday that the crisis was averted and it’s just a minor groin strain. Love is considered day-to-day and has a chance at suiting up in Week 9.
Derek Carr Injury Update - Oblique
Head coach Dennis Allen told the media on Monday that he expects Derek Carr to return to practice on Wednesday and is very likely to return in Week 9.
Drake Maye Injury Update - Concussion
Drake Maye left the Patriots’ Week 8 contest with a concussion. He’ll have an uphill battle to play in Week 9. If he doesn’t, Jacoby Brissett will be the starting quarterback.
NFL Week 9 Injury Report: Running Backs
Christian McCaffrey Injury Update - Achilles
ESPN’s Adam Schefter went on the Pat McAfee show on Monday and gave some very important updates on Christian McCaffrey. The 49ers expect to have him activated and back at practice this week, which is their bye. They also expect him to return in Week 10 against the Bucs.
Jordan Mason Injury Update - Shoulder
The 49ers will give Mason the week and will reevaluate him and his shoulder after their Week 9 bye. When he’s healthy, he’s back to being the backup running back.
Dameon Pierce Injury Update - Groin
With the Texans slated to play on Thursday night, their estimated practice report listed Dameon Pierce as a DNP. That’s definitely concerning as he only has two more days to get his groin right.
NFL Week 9 Injury Report: Wide Receivers
Tee Higgins Injury Update - Quad
Higgins’ injury happened so late in the week there was nothing they could do about it in Week 8. Head coach Zac Taylor even told the media it was “unfortunate” on Monday. He’s day-to-day according to the Bengals.
DK Metcalf Injury Update - Knee
After missing the Seahawks Week 7 contest against the Bills, DK Metcalf is trending in the right direction for Week 8. Head coach Mike Macdonald spoke with the media on Monday and said as much.
Stefon Diggs Injury Update - Knee
Although the Texans are still having tests on Stefon Diggs’ knee, it looks unlikely that he will play on a short week. He was a DNP on the team’s estimated practice report on Monday.
Brian Thomas Injury Update - Chest
After reports came out early Monday about a potential two-to-four-week absence, head coach Doug Pederson deemed Thomas day-to-day, and Thomas himself hopes to practice by the end of the week. He could possibly play in Week 9 depending on how he feels at the end of the week.
Deebo Samuel Injury Update - Ribs
The 49ers don’t seem overly concerned about Deebo Samuel’s status but they do have a bye week to fall back on. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said on Monday that Samuel is day-to-day and will be reevaluated after the bye.
Jauan Jennings Injury Update - Hip
Head coach Kyle Shanahan was asked by reporters on Monday if he expects to have Jauan Jennings back after the bye week and Kyle Shanahan’s simple response was “yes”
Christian Kirk Injury Update - Shoulder
A hot commodity at the trade deadline no more as Christian Kirk’s season is completely over due to a fractured collarbone.
Gabe Davis Injury Update - Shoulder
There has been no update on Gabe Davis at this point, but after leaving Sunday’s game with another shoulder issue, his Week 9 status is definitely in question.
Allen Lazard Injury Update - Chest
The Jets play on a short week and their estimated practice report had Allen Lazard as a DNP and is still listed week-to-week with a chest injury.
NFL Week 9 Injury Report: Tight Ends
Juwan Johnson Injury Update - Concussion
After being checked for a concussion in the Saints’ Week 8 game, he has been cleared concussion protocol already. He’s good to go for Week 9.
Player News
Packers signed WR Bo Melton, RB Emanuel Wilson, and P Daniel Whelan to their exclusive rights free agent tenders.
Melton caught on with the Packers in 2023, totaling 16 receptions for 218 yards and a touchdown in five games. He added eight receptions for 91 yards in 17 games last season. Melton will continue to be a depth piece in an already-deep Packers wide receiver room. Wilson has also been with the Packers for two seasons and rushed for 502 yards and four touchdowns as Josh Jacobs’ immediate backup last season. He will compete with MarShawn Lloyd for that role again. Whelan is the team’s punter and will be back for 2025. All three signed their exclusive rights free agent tender and will essentially be on one-year contracts this season.
Seahawks re-signed Johnathan Hankins to a one-year contract.
Hankins hasn’t had a PFF run defense grade above 52.4 since 2020 and is primarily called on to play early downs. He turned 33 in March. He’ll be a complimentary piece behind Jarran Reed and Byron Murphy II if he makes the roster out of training camp.
Chargers placed the UFA tender on RB J.K. Dobbins.
This gives the Chargers exclusive negotiating rights if he does not sign with a team by July 22 or the first 2025 NFL training camp opens, whichever comes first. The tag is mainly useful for compensatory pick reasons as Dobbins will still count towards Los Angeles’ haul in the formula if signed before then. The Chargers currently do not project to add a pick in 2026 per Over The Cap’s Nick Korte.
49ers signed OT D.J. Humphries.
Humphries played in only two games for the Chiefs last year as he spent most of the season rehabbing a late 2023 torn ACL on his own. He wasn’t appreciably good in either of those games, but he was rusty and does have a history of better than that. Entering his age-32 season for the 49ers, he’ll probably be trying to win the right tackle job opposite Trent Williams in training camp.
Patriots released LS Joe Cardona.
The team selected his replacement, Julian Ashby, in the seventh round of the draft. This snapper of balls who are longer than usual is only 33, and it’s possible he picks up his career elsewhere. There aren’t too many remaining Patriots Regimes in the wild in 2025, but Nick Caserio does still run the Texans and they let Jon Weeks walk this offseason so that’s one speculative fit.
NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill said he would be “flabbergasted” if Derek Carr played for the Saints this year.
“I would have trouble understanding why you would allow that to happen, you’re trying to build a new culture, you can’t let that guy ... you just got a rookie QB, this is the example you’re going to give him,” Underhill continued. Both Underhill and Mike Triplett believe Tyler Shough will be starting for the Saints in Week 1, with Underhill saying he had “80 percent or higher odds to start 80 percent of the games this year.” Shough would be an uninspiring superflex pick, perhaps a QB3, but given how things have played out with Carr over the past months it sure doesn’t seem like the Saints have a reason to want to continue this relationship. Mickey Loomis literally asked reporters to stop asking him Carr questions at his pre-draft press conference.
