NBA Best Bets & Player Props January 24: Grayson Allen Looks to Stay Hot from Three Point Range
Grab the broom, Fantasy Alarm NBA Best Bets went three of three again yesterday! Those wins added another 2.98 units to the count, and it is one of those days you look back at and ask why you didn’t double unit bet everything. Not to worry, and no need to be greedy, as this column is right on pace for its goal of forty units. Today there are eight games, two of which are nationally televised on ESPN. The night begins with an all-time ‘classic’ in which two of the worst teams of the year collide in an Eastern Conference showdown.
The Charlotte Hornets at Detroit Pistons begin at 7:00 PM ET and there is a proposition bet from this match. The first match on ESPN is a Rookie of the Year showdown as Victor Webanyama and the San Antonio Spurs host Chet Holmgren and the Oklahoma City Thunder. There will be a prop bet in that match as well. But tonight’s best prop comes in at even odds, and has been successful five games in a row! It is a prop bet found on ESPN’s second match of the night. The Phoenix Suns at Dallas Mavericks has Fantasy Alarm’s bet of the night.
NBA Bet of the Night
Grayson Allen OVER 2.5 Threes Made (+100 at DraftKings 2 Unit)
Grayson Allen has truthfully been more involved with Phoenix’s big three than Bradley Beal. Allen is a role player but he excels at his role, and when he is on fire from behind the arc his teammates keep feeding it to him. He rarely, if ever, has a double team on him, and the top defenders are usually occupied with Kevin Durant or Devin Booker. Jusuf Nurkic is a better-than-average center, so they can not roll help to cover Allen behind the arc either. This has allowed Allen to make forty-one of seventy-four three point attempts in eleven games this month. That is a little over 6.5 three attempts per game, and it is not slowing down against the Mavericks.
Dallas allows 117.4 points per game and has allowed an average of 122.0 in their last three games. Allen has covered this line in five straight games, has played thirty or more minutes in all but one game this month, and has a 55.4% three point success rate in January. All this at even odds makes the Bet of the Night a double unit banger!
NBA Prop Bets
Victor Wembanyama OVER 22.5 Points (-120 at BetMGM 2 Units)
Victor Wembanyama has been increasing his minutes and his point production as well. The odds were at -115 last night and have moved to -135 on DraftKings. These are good signs that sharps are moving in on the line, forcing the bookies to juice it up for their profit. The San Antonio Spurs host the Oklahoma City Thunder, and the Thunder are on the second of back-to-back games. The Thunder won a hard-pressed, tip-off-to-buzzer kind of game, and there was a bit of controversy as to whether Portland Trail Blazer head coach Chauncey Billups called a timeout. It appeared he did with under twenty seconds to play, and it has turned into a media talking point today. Those can lead to a lot of questions, and possibly a review with the NBA.
The Thunder do not travel far to San Antonio, but they still travel after a long game. Meanwhile, Wembanyama has been on a scoring spree as of late. He has scored twenty-four or more points in seven of his last eight games. He has also played twenty-six or more minutes in his last four games, as it appears the minutes restrictions placed on him since his injury are almost finished. The Thunder are a middle-of-the-road defensive team against opposing power forwards, and Victor Wembanyama should have plenty of opportunities. Fresh legs at home and against a team on the second game in as many nights, paired with a betting line that the sharps jumped on means a double unit bet on V. Wembanyama is the correct call.
LaMelo Ball OVER 27.5 Points (-115 at BetMGM)
LaMelo Ball is back and quickly becoming a favorite for Fantasy Alarm NBA Best Bets. The Charlotte Hornets are playing the Detroit Pistons as two of the worst teams in the Association try to outbest each other. Detroit allows the second most points per game with 123.0, and they have allowed an outstanding average of 129.0 in their past three games.
The Pistons also give up the 11th most points to opposing point guards. Ball has scored 28, 21, 29, 28, 18 in his games since returning. The eighteen was against a tough Minnesota Timberwolves defense which the Pistons do not have. The Hornets also recently traded away Terry Rozier who was averaging well over thirty minutes per game and 23.2 points per game. Ball will be asked to pick up the slack, and he is more than capable of doing it. Look for the former All-Star to light up the stat sheet against the Pistons tonight, with another high-point performance.
