Let's dive into the top MLB player picks on Underdog Fantasy for Sunday, August 27th.
Alec Marsh, Kansas City Royals - HIGHER than 4.5 Hits Allowed
Alec Marsh hasn’t started a game since August 5th, and his first start since then comes against one of the hottest offenses in baseball. In a bulk relief role back on August 16, he held the Mariners to just four hits across five innings, but can he do it again? I don’t think so. Over the last two weeks, the Mariners have the best batting average, OBP, and OPS as a team in Major League Baseball, not to mention a .537 SLG and .228 ISO that rank second during that stretch. They have hit lefties at a .324 clip in the month of August, and to say this offense is red-hot at the moment is an understatement. Marsh has been serving as a bulk reliever of late, but he’s handled 90+ pitches in three straight outings, so he should be able to handle a full workload in this one. The Royals are going to need some innings from him today, as the bullpen has handled a sizable workload this month. While Marsh won the last battle between these two teams, I don’t expect the same results today, and this Seattle offense is going to pounce early and often.
Shohei Ohtani, Los Angeles Angels - HIGHER than 1.5 Hits+Runs+RBI
No UCL, no problem! Ohtani has surpassed this line in four straight games, and in one of those games he only needed one at-bat to do so! He has three extra-base hits, five walks, three runs scored, and one RBI over his last two games, and he’s hit left-handed pitching at a .333 clip this month with two home runs. New York’s David Peterson has surrendered a .298/.359/.536 slash line to left-handed hitters, and while Peterson is one the better side of his home/road splits, he has a 4.20 ERA (7.54 FIP, 5.39 xFIP) and a 2.40 HR/9 over his last four starts. Ohtani is in the lineup, he’s going to continue to hit, and it only takes one swing of the bat from the best player in baseball to surpass this line. So, why not go in on this line? What can’t Ohtani do?
Other MLB Player Props to Consider
- Tommy Pham, Arizona Diamondbacks - HIGHER than 0.5 Singles
- Justin Verlander, Houston Astros - LOWER than 2.5 Earned Runs Allowed
Player News
Brett Baty is on the bench for Saturday’s Subway Series showdown against the Yankees.
Baty heads to the bench with lefty Carlos Rodón taking the hill on Saturday after 11 consecutive starts between second and third base since June 23. The 25-year-old is hitting just .196 (19-for-97) with three homers and one steal over his last 30 games and will continue to cede occasional playing time to Mark Vientos at the hot corner when the DH spot is occupied.
Ha-Seong Kim (calf) is absent from the lineup for Saturday’s contest against the Twins.
No surprise here with the quick turnaround after Kim was lifted from his Rays debut on Friday with cramping in his right calf. Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash downplayed concern regarding the issue while speaking to reporters after the game, so fantasy managers shouldn’t be overly concerned. There’s a strong chance he’s ready for Sunday’s series finale. It’ll be defensive specialist Taylor Walls taking over at shortstop on Saturday afternoon in his absence.
Drew Pomeranz will start on Saturday against the Cardinals.
Fantasy managers shouldn’t anticipate Pomeranz working more than an inning or two as Chicago’s opener in place of an injured Jameson Taillon (calf). However, he’s been phenomenal this season in his first stint in the big leagues since 2021, reeling off 23 1/3 consecutive scoreless frames over 26 appearances.
Willson Contreras is at first base and batting third on Saturday against the Cubs.
Contreras went 0-for-3 on Friday afternoon following a one-game absence after being hit by a pitch earlier this week on the left hand. It’s an encouraging sign heading into the weekend that he’s in St. Louis’ lineup for the second consecutive game against his former club and isn’t dealing with any lingering swelling or pain.
Ty France is on the bench for Saturday’s game against the Rays.
Kody Clemens gets the nod at first base to face Rays righty Taj Bradley on Saturday afternoon at Target Field. France has been scuffling of late, hitting .220 (11-for-50) with one homer over his last 15 games. He’s gone just 3-for-20 at the dish over his past seven contests.
Matt Chapman (hand) went 0-for-3 with a walk and a run scored on Friday in a minor league rehab game for Triple-A Sacramento.
Chapman appears likely to rejoin San Francisco’s lineup for Saturday’s showdown against the Giants after getting five innings under his belt at the hot corner during Friday’s rehab contest. The 32-year-old defensive stalwart has been out since early June recovering from a right hand strain. There should be an official update on his status ahead of Saturday’s contest in Sacramento.
