Breaking news across the MLB as another highly touted MLB prospect will be making his MLB debut with news that the Los Angeles Dodgers are calling up right-handed pitcher Bobby Miller from Triple-A Oklahoma City due to the injuries on the Dodgers pitching staff as Julio Urias and Dustin May have landed on the IL over the past week. Miller figures to be a hot commodity on the fantasy baseball waiver wire following this news. When it comes to fantasy baseball prospect rankings on Fantasy Alarm we see Miller coming in as the 41st prospect in the Top 400 prospect rankings. Baseball America ranked Miller 21st heading into the 2023 MLB season with Miller considered a consensus Top 30 prospect by most outlets coming into the year. With Miller’s call-up should fantasy baseball managers be looking to their fantasy baseball waiver wire to pick him up as a streaming starter in his debut?  Let’s dive into what we should expect from the highly touted rookie.

 

Bobby Miller Fantasy Value 

It hasn’t been a good season for Miller at Triple-A this season with the righty posting a 5.65 ERA, allowing nine runs on 11 hits over 14.1 innings in the Pacific Coast League. In those 14.1 innings he has six walks and 12 strikeouts which is also less than stellar. Now, the PCL is one of the toughest places for pitchers to find success, a true hitters haven and we did see Miller have some success last season at Triple-A following his promotion where he made four starts and posted an ERA of 3.38 while striking out 28 over 21.1 innings. Overall, Miller’s minor league numbers will not jump off the page, owning a career 3.79 ERA over 45 career appearances.

So, what do we make of Miller’s promotion and should fantasy baseball managers be looking to grab him off of their leagues waiver wire? I’d say that Miller is worth the speculative add but he is not someone that I would be looking to immediately start. The Dodgers upcoming schedule includes two games against the Atlanta Braves and then three games against the Tampa Bay Rays. The Braves are an offense that hit for a lot of power and while their numbers this season are betting against lefties than righties they would pose a tough test for a rookie making his debut. The Rays this season have hit the most home runs in baseball against right-handed pitching and rank first in six offensive categories against righties this season including wOBA, ISO, Slugging and OPS while ranking fifth in batting average. Those two opponents would be quite the tough task for Miller and while it’s not impossible to suggest he puts together a good outing, I’d rather take the wait and  see approach here out of the gate and hope he can draw a more favorable matchup in his following start, assuming he gets one.
