Player News
While playing shortstop for the first time, Ha-Seong Kim doubled and walked in his rehab game with Triple-A Durham on Thursday.
Kim, coming off shoulder surgery, had previously DH’d five times and played second base twice on his rehab assignment. He’s just 3-for-26 thus far with the bat, and the Rays are likely to keep him in the minors for at least another week.
Colson Montgomery hit a pair of homers for Triple-A Charlotte on Thursday.
Montgomery also had a two-homer game a couple of weeks ago, and he’s hit .276/.382/.586 in 16 games since rejoining Charlotte after a two-week stint in Arizona. He was batting .149/.223/.255 in 103 plate appearances before the White Sox had him take a step back at the end of April.
Justin Crawford went 3-for-3 with three RBI before leaving Thursday’s game for Triple-A Lehigh Valley for precautionary reasons.
Crawford appears to be day-to-day with a quad issue. He’s hit .349/.416/.448 for Lehigh Valley this season, and some have been calling for him to take over in center for the Phillies, though that still seems premature.
Ramón Laureano hit a homer Thursday for Triple-A Norfolk on his rehab assignment.
Laureano, on the IL with an ankle sprain, could be activated today or tomorrow. Jordyn Adams will likely be demoted first, but Heston Kjerstad and Dylan Carlson could also be in trouble as the Orioles get injured players back in the coming days.
Jeimer Candelario had a double in four at-bats in his first game for Triple-A Louisville on Thursday.
Candelario, on the way back from a lumbar strain, also doubled in both of his appearances for the ACL Reds before moving up. It’s hard to say exactly what the Reds’ plans are for him and rehab mate Christian Encarnacion-Strand at this point. Santiago Espinal isn’t getting the job done at third base, but he’s better defensively than those two and Terry Francona seems to love him. CES could be optioned down, but Candelario will have to return to the major league roster, probably next week.
Orelvis Martinez went 3-for-5 with a homer for Triple-A Buffalo on Thursday and has four homers in his last three games.
Martinez got off to a brutal start this year, going 2-for-36 in his first 12 games for Buffalo, but he showed improvement in posting an .811 OPS last month and he’s on a tear now, having gone 8-for-13 in the current series against the Mets’ Triple-A affiliate. The problem now is that the Jays are treating him strictly as a second baseman of late, and he has both Andrés Giménez and Ernie Clement ahead of him there.
