MLB Injury Report Update Ahead of This Weekend's Games
While the Milwaukee Brewers and Miami Marlins have to be stoked to be getting back Brandon Woodruff and Eury Perez respectively, teams like the San Diego Padres and Atlanta Braves aren’t as excited, as the Padres placed Michael King on the IL, and the Braves are likely preparing to be without AJ Smith-Shawver for some time. Ronel Blanco has to get Tommy John surgery, prematurely ending his 2025 season, and the Rangers are evaluating the extent of Nathan Eovaldi’s ailment. MLB Week 10 Injury Report Update: Pitchers
AJ Smith-Shawver, Atlanta Braves - Elbow
I’m getting bad vibes here with Smith-Shawver, and yes, it’s because it looks like he admitted he felt a pop (see video below). Oh, manager Brian Snitker also said that “it doesn’t look good.”
Nathan Eovaldi, Texas Rangers - Triceps
Eovaldi left his last start early with what the team is calling triceps fatigue. At this juncture, he’s expected to make his next turn in the rotation.
Michael King, San Diego Padres - Shoulder
King was placed on the IL a few days ago with inflammation in his pitching shoulder.
Ronel Blanco, Houston Astros - Elbow
Blanco’s elbow will require Tommy John surgery, thus ending his 2025 season.
Eury Perez, Miami Marlins - Elbow
Perez will make one more rehab start before being activated and joining the big league rotation. He just struck out four batters across five shutout innings in his most recent rehab start.
Aaron Nola, Philadelphia Phillies - Ankle
Nola’s sprained right ankle is progressing nicely, but the expectation is that he’ll require a rehab assignment before being activated from the IL. Through nine starts on the season, Nola is 1-7 with a 6.16 ERA and 1.51 WHIP.
Brandon Woodruff, Milwaukee Brewers - Ankle
The shoulder doesn’t seem much of a concern for Woodruff at this juncture, as it’s more so the ankle issue that popped up and set him back. He supposedly needs one more rehab start in early June before being activated.
Bryce Miller (elbow) and Bryce Miller (elbow) - Seattle Mariners
The Mariners should be pleased with the progress of these two righties, as Miller should be activated from the IL and start on May 31. Meanwhile, Logan Gilbert’s rehab assignment began on May 29th, and he struck out three batters over 1.2 IP.
Cole Ragans, Kansas City Royals - Groin
Expect Ragans to toe the rubber at some point during the week of June 2. His last start came on May 16th against the Cardinals.
MLB Week 10 Injury Report Update: Hitters
Yordan Alvarez, Houston Astros - Hand
Alvarez is likely to return sometime this weekend or early next week from his hand issue, assuming there’s no setbacks with facing live pitching on Friday.
Jazz Chisholm Jr., New York Yankees - Oblique
Chisholm began a rehab assignment on May 29th, and he played 3B in that game. That’s worth noting, as all 29 of his starts with the Yankees in 2025 came at 2B, but the majority of his starts with the Yankees last season came at the hot corner.
Mike Trout, Los Angeles Angels - Knee
Trout’s return seems to be nearing, as the expectation is that he’ll return at some point during the team’s upcoming road trip, which begins today.
Christian Walker, Houston Astros - Hand
Walker took a pitch to his right hand and is considered day-to-day at this time.
Steven Kwan, Cleveland Guardians - Wrist
Kwan is expected to return to the lineup on Friday after being removed from Wednesday’s game with what the team called wrist inflammation.
Bryce Harper, Philadelphia Phillies - Elbow
While Harper didn’t play in either of the two games on Thursday, his elbow issue isn’t expected to be serious. Consider him day to day.
Player News
CJ Abrams hit a solo homer, but the Nationals fell to the Angels on Saturday.
Abrams hit a solo homer in the fifth inning to the game at 1-1 off an otherwise effective Kyle Hendricks. He’s been excellent in June with a .313/.377/.469 with four homers and nine stolen bases. It appears he’s putting together his best season at the age of 24, and he has a chance to be a fantasy star for the foreseeable future.
Kevin Newman hit a three-run homer in a win for the Angels on Saturday over the Nationals.
Mike Trout hit a solo homer to help the Angels to an 8-2 win over the Nationals on Saturday.
Kyle Hendricks held the Nationals to one run over five innings in a no-decision for the Angels on Saturday.
Hendricks scattered five hits, and he was able to strike out five; a total he’s only reached five times in his 16 starts. The veteran right-hander put together a solid June with an ERA of 3.21 over 28 innings, and it lowers his season mark to 4.66. Even with Hendricks pitching relatively well, this is a hard profile to trust, and it would be a mistake to ignore his struggles in the previous months/years. He’ll be back on the bump for the Angels on Independence Day when he faces the Blue Jays.
Michael Soroka fired six innings of one-run baseball while striking out five in a no-decision versus the Angels on Saturday.
Soroka pitched well. The Nationals’ bullpen did not. Soroka exited with a 2-1 lead and it was immediately vanquished on homers by Mike Trout and Kevin Newman an inning later. That’s a bummer, but doesn’t completely negate a start for Soroka where he allowed just two hits and one walk while striking out five. He still has a 4.70 ERA, but there have been flashes of the pitcher he was with Atlanta a few years ago as of late. He’ll get a chance to keep it going against the Red Sox on Friday.
Seiya Suzuki homered and tripled in a blowout win for the Cubs over the Astros on Saturday.
Suzuki hit a two-run shot off Ryan Gusto that gave the Cubs an 11-2 lead. He’s tripled three times in 2025, while the homer brings that total up to 22 at just-over the halfway point of the season. Suzuki doesn’t get nearly enough plaudits for how solid of a player he is, but the Cubs are well aware.
