MLB News and Notes from Monday
Blue Jays Smackdown the Red Sox
WWE Smackdown was in Boston last night but the bigger smackdown was happening down the road at Fenway Park where the Blue Jays put up four touchdowns on the Red Sox pitching staff in a 28-5 demolishing. Yes, you see that correctly, the Blue Jays scored 28 runs off Red Sox pitching. The night was highlighted by a Raimel Tapia inside the park grand slam on a lazy flyball that was lost in the lights by Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran and things just got worse from there. Check out all the highlights below because there are just too many to list.
Bit of an “Oh No” from Ohtani in All-Star Break Return
Hey, the man isn’t perfect. After allowing just TWO RUNS TOTAL over his last seven starts, Shohei Ohtani ran into a hot Braves lineup that knocked him around for six earned runs over 6.1 innings. Even though he gave up the six runs we still saw him finish with 11 strikeouts, marking the fifth straight start with double-digit strikeouts. He now has 134 strikeouts over 93.1 innings this season.
Braxton Garrett Should Be A Popular Waiver Wire Add
Marlins rookie Braxton Garrett turned in yet another strong start on Friday, finishing with seven strikeouts over six innings while allowing just one earned run. He’s now faced the Pirates in two straight and he has held them to one run over 12 innings. Garrett has looked good over his last five starts, allowing just five earned runs over 25 innings. He now has a 3.42 ERA with 47 strikeouts over 47.1 innings this season
Saturday's MLB Best Bets
OVER 7.5 Strikeouts
Feels like a low total here for Gerrit Cole who has gone over this total in four of his last six outings and in one of the two outings he has faced the Orioles this season. Baltimore has a 22.7% strikeout rate against right-handed pitching this season while Cole has a 32.9% strikeout rate on the year with a K/9 of 11.7.
OVER 6.5 Strikeouts
We love to attack the Angels with opposing pitcher strikeout props and we’ve seen Kyle Wright put up some big strikeout totals at times this season. Over the past two weeks the Angels have a ridiculous 35% strikeout rate against right-handed pitching and overall this season that number sits at 27.4%. Don’t be afraid of Wright’s recent strikeout totals, if anything, those performances helped us get today’s low total to target. Let’s take advantage of it.
OVER 6.5 Strikeouts
Zach Wheeler has gone over this total in 10 of his 17 starts this season and again, I think we are getting a low number here due to his last few outings which were against teams that do not strikeout that often. The Cubs however, have the 11th highest strikeout rate against RHP this season at 23.5%. Wheeler has a 26.7% strikeout rate on the year with a K/9 of 9.75. This is again, a number I really like.
