Pirates vs. Rays Predictions: Tuesday, April 2nd

It's Paul Skenes day again for the Pirates so let’s run back a winning wager that was made on Opening Day! By this point what we all assumed would happen to Skenes is happening, he is throwing 6 great innings and getting no run support and that gives way to today's wager.

The Pirates have scored just 15 runs over the course of their 6 games to start the season, the 4th lowest run total per game in MLB at this time. Hard to see that improving after the Rays shut them out yesterday and with Ryan Pepiot starting it could be bad. The Pirates are batting .189 as a team right now as well so don’t expect any heroes to emerge and drive in runs.

On the Rays side they are obviously better offensively but Skenes is a machine with his 1.96 ERA last season and in his opening start allowed just 2 earned runs on 5.1 innings pitched. They could score more in this game down the stretch but for 5 innings give me the under in this game.

In addition, the Pirates are striking out a ton so far this season with a K rate of 26.6% so give me the over on Ryan Pepiot strikeouts as he reached 8 Ks in his first start of the season and 7 punchouts seems more than attainable for him today.

Nationals vs. Blue Jays Predictions: Tuesday, April 2nd

It’s the final game of this interleague series this afternoon as the Blue Jays took the first 2 games but I am not thinking sweep here in this matchup! It's mostly because of MacKenzie Gore who will start on the mound today for the Nats and should give them a huge leg up!

Gore wowed the baseball world during his first start of the season blanking the Phillies for 6 innings allowing just 1 hit with no walks and 13 strikeouts, yes 13! I don’t expect another start of that magnitude but something near that is not impossible. The young Washington bats also seem to be waking up as in this series CJ Abrams has played very well and James Wood plated his first home run of his season as well!

On the Blue Jays side, they’re going to throw a bullpen game or at least go with an opener. I know it’s a new season but last year the Blue Jays had one of the worst bullpens in MLB in terms of ERA at 4.82 which was the 2nd highest mark behind just the Rockies. There are still a lot of the same arms on this team so give me the Nationals to win today behind a great day from Gore and the young hitters attacking this subpar bullpen of the Blue Jays.
