Cardinals vs. Red Sox Predictions For ESPN Sunday Night Baseball, 4/6
With Sunday Night Baseball always being the final game of the weekend, fans were looking forward to an earlier matchup yesterday afternoon. However, the weather had something to say about that, which is why we’ve got a doubleheader between these teams today!
So, to be clear, the Cardinals vs. Red Sox predictions here are focused on the Sunday Night Baseball game, or the second game of the doubleheader. We know that these teams will be locked into this nationally televised game, as will fans, and the pitching matchup won’t quite be the same as scheduled.
As planned, the Cards are still sending veteran Miles Mikolas to the bump, but the Sox are sending expected Sean Newcomb out there for the earlier game instead. Although they’re holding out on announcing a starter for Sunday Night Baseball, we’ve still got a spot we love for the best bet from our Cardinals vs. Red Sox predictions.
St. Louis Cardinals: Nolan Gorman Heads To The IL
As if fans weren’t already bummed that they couldn’t see their Cards in action due to the weather postponement, the last news they got before that was the loss of second baseman Nolan Gorman.
Losing the series opener was already not ideal, and the 25-year-old suffered a right hamstring strain. Soft tissue injuries are never ideal with how much they can linger, but further evaluation showed that he shouldn’t miss much time. For a guy who hit .500 with a home run in his first eight at-bats, that’s good news for Cards fans.
Boston Red Sox: Changing Lives
Given that we didn’t have a game on the diamond between these teams yesterday, the biggest storyline out of Boston came off the field. That was with the contract that the Red Sox gave to rookie Kristian Campbell.
At the age of just 22, within just a week span, the utility man made both his MLB debut AND signed a whopping $60 million contract over eight seasons. He’s set to provide Boston with his versatility in terms of playing both the infield and outfield. Campbell called the contract simply life-changing.

Cardinals vs. Red Sox Best Bet: Rafael Devers Over 1.5 Total Bases (More Player Projections At Underdog)
We mentioned that even with Boston not immediately naming a starter for Sunday Night Baseball, we still had a target for the best bet from our Cardinals vs. Red Sox predictions. That’s because we’re focused on the Red Sox lineup instead.
Specifically, the matchup between slugger Rafael Devers and Cardinals starter Miles Mikolas. Slugger isn’t exactly a word associated with Devers to start the season due to his strikeout struggles, but it’s safe to say that he’s still among the best at the plate over the best several seasons.
He’s a double machine, which means that he has the ability to hit over a 1.5 total bases prop in a single swing. It also doesn’t hurt that Fenway Park’s Green Monster helps with those doubles, and it’s a hitter’s park overall. Let’s also not forget that Rafael Devers is just two seasons removed from having the sixth-most total bases in the American League.
That’s all been without mentioning Devers’ success against Miles Mikolas. While it isn’t the biggest sample size in the world, anytime we see a 1.200 slugging percentage, we can’t ignore it. He’s recorded six total bases against Mikolas in just five at-bats, and with him turning the season around in the series opener (2-for-3 with an RBI), we expect him to be in form.
With the strikeout trend to be silenced from here on out, we’re taking Rafael Devers over 1.5 total bases as the best bet from our Cardinals vs. Red Sox predictions, and you can find a ton of player stat projections at Underdog!
Cardinals vs. Red Sox Injury Report & Starting Pitchers
Just about every MLB team enters the season knowing that guys will be starting on the injured list, and for the Red Sox, the most notable was starter Patrick Sandoval. They also have another starter Kutter Crawford on the 15-day IL and left fielder Masataka Yoshida on the 10-day IL.
As for Cardinals vs. Red Sox injury news in St. Louis, they are actually largely healthy, but the aforementioned injury to second baseman Nolan Gorman means that he is now on the 10-day IL. As for Cardinals vs. Red Sox starters for Sunday Night Baseball…
- St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher today: Adam Pallante (1-0, 3.60 ERA)
- Boston Red Sox starting pitcher today: Sean Newcomb (0-1, 9.00 ERA)

Player News
Lane Thomas (wrist) remains out of the lineup for Tuesday’s series opener against the Orioles.
There doesn’t appear to be any sort of urgency for Cleveland with Angel Martinez hitting .500 (5-for-10) in three games since returning to the majors. Thomas will sit out his sixth straight game on Tuesday night and at this point it doesn’t make a ton of sense to send him to the injured list.
Dane Myers remains out of the lineup for Tuesday’s game against the Diamondbacks.
Myers hasn’t appeared in a game since last Wednesday, but there’s been no indication that he’s headed to the injured list. It’ll be Jesús Sáncez in center field on Tuesday night in his return from the IL.
Eury Pérez (elbow) will face hitters on Wednesday in a live batting practice session.
Pérez continues to ramp up his throwing program in advance of a midseason return to Miami’s rotation. The uber-talented 22-year-old is in the final stages of his rehabilitation process from Tommy John surgery and should be set for minor league rehab starts at some point in the coming weeks.
Orioles general manager Mike Elias told reporters Zach Eflin is dealing with a “very mild” right lat strain.
Elias told reporters Tuesday that Eflin’s return timetable is more in the range of weeks instead of months. The 31-year-old righty hit the IL last week with a right lat strain, so this is an encouraging update. It’s possible he’ll be ready to rejoin Baltimore’s rotation at some point in May, but there isn’t an official timeline at this juncture. There should be a clearer picture once he resumes throwing.
Kyle Higashioka is making a second straight start behind the plate Tuesday against the Angels and left-hander Yusei Kikuchi.
It’s just the second time this season that’s happened. Jonah Heim is starting tonight, too, as he’s DHing against the lefty. While Heim and Higashioka split time pretty evenly over the first 10 days, Heim is getting more at-bats now; he’s started seven of eight games between catcher and DH.
Joey Bart (back) is not in the lineup for Tuesday’s game against the Nationals.
It’ll be Henry Davis handling the catching duties with Bart out of the lineup for the fourth straight game with back discomfort.
