2024 Player Outlook
2023 Recap: Ortiz went 5-5 with a 4.78 ERA (5.57 FIP), 1.35 HR/9 and 1.70 WHIP last year. Ortiz allowed a lot of contact, and a lot of hard contact, too. In fact, his barrel rate came in at the 17th percentile, while his hard-hit rate, average exit velocity allowed, and xERA were all in the first percentile. He really struggled against left-handed hitters last year, as they slashed .333/.418/.547 against him last year, not to mention a .411 wOBA. His fastball was largely ineffective against left-handed hitters last season, so there should be an emphasis in 2024 placed on improving against lefties, a la more sliders and changeups.
2024 Outlook: In 2024, Ortiz has a spot in the team's starting rotation, at least to begin the year, and while I do believe his strikeout rate will be higher than last year's 14.8 percent, he'll need to attack the zone more and get ahead of hitters. He's completely off the fantasy radar in draft season.
