Mariners signed RHP Zach Pop to a minor league deal.
Pop was released by the Blue Jays at the start of April. The 28-year-old has had some success in the majors, but has struggled over the last two seasons. Seattle’s bullpen has struggled in 2025, so they’ll look and see if they can turn him into something useful for a very low price.
Jake McCarthy (hand) is hitting eighth and playing center against the Cubs on Friday.
McCarthy will get his first action since Sunday after being plunked in the hand. The outfielder has scuffled with the bat in 2025, but the D-Backs will give him a shot to turn it around before handing the job full-time to Alek Thomas.
Vidal Bruján, who came off the IL on Tuesday, is playing third base Friday in his first start for the Cubs.
That’s three third basemen in three games since Matt Shaw was sent down; Gage Workman got the call Tuesday, and Jon Berti played the position on Wednesday. The Cubs will likely go with the hot hand if one ever materializes.
Brewers recalled INF Caleb Durbin from Triple-A Nashville.
He goes into Oliver Dunn’s roster spot. Durbin was off to a decent start in Triple-A, hitting .278/.316/.482 with two homers and three steals in five attempts, and the Brewers will probably give him a real shot at third base here. It’s possible he’ll steal enough bases to be useful in mixed leagues, but his average and power numbers will likely be pretty modest.
Cubs recalled LHP Jordan Wicks from Triple-A Iowa.
After giving up five runs in 9 2/3 innings in two starts for Iowa, Wicks was moved to the pen for his last appearances and pitched three perfect innings with five strikeouts. He’s set to work in middle relief for now, though if he does go long this weekend, he might quickly be swapped out for a fresh arm.
Cubs optioned LHP Luke Little to Triple-A Iowa.
Little walked four of the six batters he faced in his one appearance for the Cubs, though he wasn’t as wild as that suggests. With a 2.97 ERA in 33 1/3 major league innings to date, he probably won’t have to wait too long for another look.
