Women’s World Cup DFS Playbook August 1: Sophia Smith Leads USA vs Portugal on Tuesday Morning
We have another split DFS soccer slate for the 2023 Women’s World Cup on Tuesday morning. Group E is playing the early games at 3 AM ET with Group D wrapping up in the later slate at 6 AM ET. All four games are featured in FanDuel’s main slate while you’ll have to choose one or the other on DraftKings. We will focus on the early games for the DraftKings portion of the WWC DFS Playbook, since that is the slate that features the U.S. Women’s National Team. Below, check out the top daily fantasy soccer plays and Women's World Cup DFS picks for Tuesday morning's slate. We'll also preview the slate beforehand and examine some key details to know for USA vs Portugal and the other matches.

Slate Overview
For the second consecutive game, a lot comes down to whether or not USWNT manager Vlatko Andonovski switches up his starting lineup. He played the exact same starting 11 for the first two games, but after a disappointing 1-1 draw with the Netherlands in which the U.S. was thoroughly outplayed in the first half, it could be time for some changes. Andonovski used just one sub against the Netherlands, bringing Rose Lavelle on at halftime. Lavelle was reportedly on a minutes limit in that game but if she is able to play more than 45 minutes Tuesday, she will likely be in the starting lineup.
The other reason we may see a new lineup is that this is Andonovski’s last chance to get his players some game time before the knockout round. Five players are still waiting to make their 2023 World Cup debut, and while Andonovski appears stubborn enough to just roll out the same 11 again, I think he’ll want to get at least a couple of those players some game time.
Group D is interesting because all four games so far have ended 1-0. England won both of its games and so long as they do not lose to China by two or more goals, they will advance to the knockout stage. With just one point England would win the group and face Nigeria. The runner-up will face Australia.
I don’t know if I necessarily expect both games in Group D to end 1-0 again, but there will almost certainly be more scoring in the early games. If the Netherlands and the USA both win, as is expected, then the group will be decided by goal differential. The winner will avoid Sweden in the next round, so both teams have plenty of incentive to run the score up.

Player | Team | Opp. | DK $ | DK FPPG | FD $ | FD FPPG |
Daphne van Domselaar | NED | VIE | 6000 | 7.72 | 14 | 9.50 |
Alyssa Naeher is probably just as safe, though I think Portugal has the firepower to surprise the U.S. on a counterattack. There is virtually no way the Netherlands fails to win this game and keep a clean sheet. You can try for a cheaper option on FanDuel but if you're just playing the early slate, I wouldn't mess around with anyone else.
Mary Earps | ENG | CHN | 11 | 19.00
I'm not sold on England as a title contender but they're pretty clearly the best team in this group. Another 1-0 win would be just fine for fantasy, and I wouldn't be shocked if Haiti scores a goal against Denmark. I love her price on FanDuel but she's playable on DraftKings as well.
Zhu Yu | CHN | ENG | 8 | 16.50 | ||
England's offense hasn't exactly set the world on fire, and China's clean sheet against Haiti is impressive considering they lost Zhang Rui to a red card in the first half. I'll probably just pay up but Yu is the best bet if you need a cheap keeper. |

Player | Team | Opp. | DK $ | DK FPPG | FD $ | FD FPPG |
Lynn Williams | USA | POR | 7000 | 0 | 12
If you have read any of my articles or spent any time on soccer Twitter, you are probably sick of hearing about Lynn Williams. I'll just say I have no idea why she is cheaper than Trinity Rodman. Williams will be in most of my lineups if she starts, especially on FanDuel.
Katja Snoeijs | NED | VIE | 4400 | -0.37 | 16 | 1.60 |
Snoeijs was quiet against the USWNT but now she faces one of the worst teams in the tournament. If Lineth Beerensteyn's ankle injury keeps her out again, Snoeijs has a chance to be a fantastic value on DraftKings.
Sophia Smith | USA | POR | 10000 | 25.86 | 22 | 42.30 |
Smith has been the best U.S. forward in each game, though Trinity Rodman outscored her for fantasy against the Netherlands. You can obviously pivot to one of her teammates if you need to save money but I will pay up for Smith if I can.
Alessia Russo | ENG | CHN | 17 | 15.80
Russo is a bit risky, but if she starts up top again, she is too cheap on FanDuel. She had five shots on goal against Haiti, and this could easily be the game she breaks through. That being said, I might pivot to Chloe Kelly for cash games. especially on DraftKings.
Lieke Martens | NED | VIE | 8300 | 5.47 | 21 | 11.70 |
If Netherlands runs up the score like we expect, Martens should be involved. She is risky, and expensive, but there is a good chance it pays off.
Jessica Silva | POR | USA | 4800 | 5.74 | 13 | 12.20 |
We need at least one player from outside the USA and Netherlands for our DK lineups, and Silva is it. She had three crosses against the Netherlands and I think she has a decent chance to hurt the U.S. on the counterattack. At the very least, she'll allow you to pay up elsewhere. |
Midfielders | ||||||
Player | Team | Opp. | DK $ | DK FPPG | FD $ | FD FPPG |
Sherida Spitse | NED | VIE | 6500 | 11.66 | 14 | 25.25 |
As we would expect, Spitse was better against Portugal than against team USA. You can pay up for one of her teammates if you're chasing goals, but Spitse is safe and should provide nice value on both sites.
Rose LaVelle | USA | POR | 5300 | 8.21 | 16 | 14.70 |
LaVelle played 45 minutes off the bench Wednesday and if her minutes limit allows, she will almost certainly start Tuesdaythough. LaVelle has 16.4 DK fantasy points in 72 minutes and if she starts, she is too cheap on both sites. |
Player | Team | Opp. | DK $ | DK FPPG | FD $ | FD FPPG |
Julie Ertz | USA | POR | 4500 | 6.47 | 12 | 11.75 |
There is a chance she will move back to the midfield but I'm not sure it will matter for fantasy. She is here because she has a chance to get on the end of a free kick, thought it doesn't hurt that she had three crosses against Vietnam.
Emily Fox | USA | POR | 4700 | 7.4 | 11 | 9.50 |
Sophia Huerta would be a must-play if she starts but Fox is just fine for her price. She had three crosses and two shots against Vietnam and created two chances against the Netherlands.
Stefanie van der Gragt | NED | VIE | 3600 | 8.3 | 13 | 25.30 |
I don't really expect her to score another goal, but the Netherlands should get plenty of free kicks in this game. I'll pivot to Dominque Janssen if I have extra money to spend but van der Gragt looks like the better value.
Diana Gomes | POR | USA | 4400 | -1.1 | 10 | 4.80 |
I'm kind of shocked Gomes didn't have more clearances against the Netherlands but she should against USA. Vietnam had 39 clearances against the U.S. in their match. Gomes is a bit risky but it could pay off quite nicely on FanDuel.
Yao Wei | CHN | ENG | 10 | 16.95 | ||
I'm not sure why she is so cheap considering she has at least five clearances in both games. Seems quite safe on FanDuel.
Rachel Daly | ENG | CHN | 16 | 24.20
I might pivot to Alex Greenwood, especially if Daly starts at left-back again. I think there is a chance Daly replaces Alessia Russo at the number nine and if that is the case, Daly would be a must-play for me. |
