Rory McIlory Open Championship Pick

This is certainly not an easy course, but Rory is coming off of a strong showing at the Scottish Open last week and he has been playing great golf for most of this season. The missed putt at the U.S. Open aside, Rory comes into this tournament as one of the favorites to win and his first-round projection here is set at 69.0 strokes, which means we need McIlory to finish at least two-under par for the opening round.

Rory is one of the longest hitters on tour which will be very beneficial given how long this course plays and he is a strong iron player. He also has some course history here as well, finishing T5 when the Open Championship was played here in 2016. For round 1, we are going to go with Rory McIlory finishing lower than 69.0 strokes.

Tiger Woods Open Championship Pick

From a nostalgia standpoint, I would love to see Tiger Woods make one more magical run at a major championship, but the reality is that Tiger just doesn’t seem to have that in him anymore. He’s 48 years old and the significant injuries and surgeries over the years have just taken too much of a toll on his body. Sure, he still has the distance and yes, he still hits those shots that only Tiger Woods can hit but at the end of the day, it is all about the scorecard and this season the scorecard has not been good for Tiger Woods. 

He has appeared in four tournaments, missing the cut in three of those four while finishing over par in all of them. Royal Troon is not an easy course and knowing what Tiger will have to go through when it comes to walking the course and putting himself in contention, it just seems unlikely that this is the spot that he finds success.
