In 1984, the PGA Tour made a splash in Las Vegas by hosting its first-ever million-dollar purse at the Panasonic Las Vegas Invitational. Denis Watson claimed victory and took home $162,000 from the $1.2 million prize pool.

Now, four decades later, the Shriners Children’s Open returns to Vegas with a $7 million purse—still one of the smaller payouts on the tour. The winner, however, will pocket $1,260,000, and for many players, the stakes are about more than money.

Shriners Children’s Open 2024: Daily Fantasy Golf Picks & Projections

As the fourth event in the eight-tournament "FedEx Cup Fall" series, most competitors are battling to secure status for the 2025 season. Tom Kim, the two-time defending champion, isn't one of them.

Already set for next year, he enters as the favorite, aiming for a third consecutive title. Unlike last year, when Lexi Thompson brought extra attention to the event, this year’s field is focused on players fighting for their tour spots.

The competition unfolds at TPC Summerlin, a 7,255-yard, par-71 course where low scores are common. Birdies will be plentiful, as the last six winners have all finished at least 20 under par. It’s a tournament where the stakes are high, even if the prize pool isn’t the headline.

TPC Summerlin: Course Breakdown This Week

TPC Summerlin, set in the hills of Las Vegas, NV, has been a standout golf destination since its 1991 debut. Designed by Bobby Weed and Fuzzy Zoeller, it offers top-tier practice facilities that attract many PGA Tour pros, making it a go-to spot for players looking to sharpen their skills.

Balancing tournament-level challenge with playability for amateurs, the course features wide fairways, generous greens, and risk-reward holes that suit Las Vegas's adventurous vibe.

Recent upgrades have reshaped all 18 greens with added slopes, making them firmer and more challenging, while fairways were enhanced for durability in the desert climate. Though fairways are spacious, straying off course can land players in rocky terrain or native cacti, often forcing a drop.

TPC Summerlin is known for its low scores, thanks to reachable par 5s and a drivable par 4 on the 15th. Still, the course demands precise short-game skills, with tight Bermuda lies and tricky bunkers challenging players around the greens.

Success hinges on accurate approach shots from within 150 yards and a reliable putter, as scoring opportunities are plentiful. Players who master these elements can excel at this birdie-friendly course.

Shriners Children’s Open 2024 Field: Golf DFS

Tom Kim is looking for a third consecutive win at the Shriners Children’s Open. After nearly cracking the top 50 in the FedExCup standings and representing the International Team at the Presidents Cup in Montreal, he’s ready for another strong finish. The last PGA TOUR player to win the same event three years in a row was Steve Stricker at the John Deere Classic (2009-2011).

Matt McCarty returns after his recent victory at the Black Desert Championship, which boosted him to No. 95 in the FedExCup Fall standings. The field also features nine players who finished in the FedExCup top 50, including Taylor Pendrith, who tied for third at this event last year.

Key stories include Ian Gilligan, a cancer survivor who qualified by winning the Southern Highlands Collegiate, and UNLV senior Caden Fioroni, making his PGA TOUR debut. With Vince Whaley and Daniel Berger fighting for position near the No. 125 bubble, the competition is heating up in Las Vegas.

PGA Best Bets & Predictions: Shriners Children’s Open 2024

PGA DFS Picks: Top Tier

TOM KIM ($10,800)

Tom Kim is a top pick at this year's Shriners Children's Open, and it's easy to see why. As the most talented player in the field, he’s proven that TPC Summerlin is a perfect fit for his game, with back-to-back wins at this event over the last two years.

Kim's ability to excel on this course makes him a standout choice for any lineup. Given his track record and the value of his current price at $10,800, he’s an excellent lineup anchor. With his skillset and familiarity with the course, Kim is well-positioned to chase a third straight victory.

TOM HOGE ($9,800)

Tom Hoge is the premier iron player in the Shriners Children's Open field, especially on shorter courses where many approach shots come from inside 150 yards. TPC Summerlin is a great fit for his skill set, which is evident in his past success here, including four top-25 finishes in eight starts.

As a past champion at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, Hoge has shown he can excel on courses with similar setups. With his consistent play and comfort at this venue, he’s primed for another strong performance in the desert this week.

PGA DFS Picks: Mid-Tier

BEAU HOSSLER ($9,500)

Beau Hossler has been playing excellent golf lately, finishing as a runner-up in a playoff at the Sanderson Farms Championship and securing a tie for 11th at the Black Desert Championship. He now returns to TPC Summerlin for the Shriners Children's Open, a course where he’s had notable success.

Hossler has recorded two top-10 finishes in six starts here, including a T-7 finish last year. With his recent form and familiarity with the course, he’s poised for another strong performance, making him a player to watch closely this week.

ADAM HADWIN ($8,900)

Adam Hadwin may be coming off a break since the BMW Championship in August, but his strong track record at the Shriners Children’s Open makes him a player to watch this week. Four top-10 finishes over the past five years, including a runner-up finish to Tom Kim in 2023.

Hadwin's familiarity with the layout and proven success make him a strong contender for another great performance at this year’s Shriners Children’s Open.

HARRY HALL ($8,400)

Las Vegas resident Harry Hall has shown his comfort at TPC Summerlin, with top-26 finishes in all three of his appearances at the Shriners Children's Open. His familiarity with the altitude and local turf conditions gives him an edge on this course.

Additionally, Hall is one of the top long-term bentgrass putters in the field, which suits TPC Summerlin's greens well. Known for his strong performance on easier courses with high greens-in-regulation rates, Hall brings plenty of upside this week and could be a solid pick for success.

PGA DFS Picks: Value Tier

MATTI SCHMID ($7,800)

Matti Schmid has been steadily improving with each tournament this fall. After beginning with a T-58 finish at the Procore Championship, he made significant strides by tying for 16th at the Sanderson Farms Championship. Most recently, he clinched a solo fifth-place finish at the Black Desert Championship, showcasing his growing form.

Schmid also has experience at TPC Summerlin, where he tied for 26th in his debut at the Shriners Children’s Open last year. With this upward trajectory, he’s a player to keep an eye on as he aims for a strong performance this week.

JUSTIN LOWER ($7,200)

Justin Lower is poised for a strong bounce-back at the Shriners Children’s Open after narrowly missing the cut at the Black Desert Championship last week. Known as the top bentgrass putter in the field over the past three years, he excels on the greens and has a knack for capitalizing on scoring opportunities.

TPC Summerlin's high greens-in-regulation percentage plays to his strengths, making him a dangerous contender in this tournament. With his impressive putting skills, Lower could easily turn in a standout performance and make a significant impact on the leaderboard.

JOEL DAHMAN ($6,600)

Joel Dahmen is an exceptional wedge player with a strong history at TPC Summerlin. After a top-40 finish at the Black Desert Championship, where he gained over four strokes on approach, Dahmen returns to a course where he previously finished seventh.

His solid short game and familiarity with TPC Summerlin's nuances position him well for success at the Shriners Children's Open. With his recent form and proven track record, Dahmen is a player to watch as he seeks to capitalize on his skills and experience in this tournament.
