We all got a week off from PGA DFS following the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP in which Collin Morikawa took home the crown. That was his first PGA Tour victory since the 2021 Open Championship at Royal St. George’s. He ran away from the field on Sunday shooting a 63 to win the tournament by 6 strokes. Collin won against the best field we’ve seen during this fall portion of the season but now things drop off once again in Mexico for the World Wide Technology Championship. 

Our PGA Tour professionals have to suffer through a trip to Cabo San Lucas for this weekend’s tournament which is hosted and designed by the one and only Tiger Woods. For the first time, the PGA Tour will hold an event on a course that was designed by the 15-time major champion. El Cardonal Golf Course at Diamante opened in 2014, and was the first course that Woods’ TGR design firm completed. Tiger said, “I set up the golf strategy to make golfers think and make choices.” He added, “There are going to be different ways to play every hole.” It should make for a fun weekend especially with no course history to use as a baseline.    

The course is a Par 72, and sits with a total distance of 7,363 yards. We will see a lot of local flavor from cacti, to palo verde trees and a lot of desert flora around the track. We will also see rustic sand traps strategically placed around typical landing areas for these players. The land that the course is on drops nearly 250 feet. It will be a challenging walk for these players and caddies. It is also placed along the Mexican coastline which will bring the wind into play. The good news, the fairways are wider than these golfers typically see and extremely large greens for them to land. Overall, these professionals should put up a lot of birdies on this course.

No, the field is not great this weekend in Mexico. We will see a few names we know and trust like Cameron Young, Sahith Theegala, Lucas Glover, Emiliano Grillo, and Chris Kirk who are all inside the world’s top 50 golfers. Another name to keep an eye on this weekend is Ludvig Aberg fresh from his Ryder Cup debut. The 24-year-old impressed in the back half of the regular season and has already scored a runner up and a Top 15 in his first two starts of this fall swing schedule. A familiar name returning to action this week for the first time since June is Maverick McNealy.  He had scored 3 Top 10 finishes before needing surgery to fix his torn left anterior sterno-clavicular in his shoulder. We are even going to see Mr. Cinderella himself, Michael Block tee it up this weekend. If you don’t remember, he’s the PGA Pro who stole everyone’s hearts with his amazing performance at the PGA Championship. So, while there are not a lot of huge names in the field, there are a lot of storylines to watch.

I can’t wait to get a look at this course and see some of the unique things that a Tiger Woods design brings to the competition. This is the first of many courses that could be coming down the pipeline from Mr. Woods.
